“Ma’s going to be thrilled,” he whispered.
“I know. We can tell her once they get here,” she said and took his hand as he stood. “Come on, let’s go get some food.”
“Yeah, before you get grumpy again,” he mentioned quietly then whistled. All three dogs followed closely as they walked hand in hand down to the diner.
As they strolled along, a summer breeze rustled the leaves overhead. Mel’s eyes drifted towards them, smiling at the man she knew was watching over them all. She leaned against Danny’s side, and he kissed the top of her head sweetly, keeping her close, keeping them safe. He spent three days a week in the city, but with Greg taking over more of the business for him, Danny would soon be able to spend almost all of his time with Mel. She looked forward to it, and since that night in his office, they had made a promise not to keep anything from each other again.
“By the way,” she said when they reached Main Street, “I might have neglected to tell you one other teensy little thing. I had the contractors change the plans a little.”
“Oh?” he asked and spun her around. “And what might that be?”
“We now have our own private barn, complete with plush bed and…” She reached up and whispered the rest in his ear. His hands fisted in her dress as he groaned. “You approve?”
“How could I ever say no to you?” He slanted his lips over hers as people and cars passed by. Mel didn’t care. They could stare all they wanted. She had everything she ever wanted in her life, right there beside her.
