“I command the Mage Marshals,” Scar said, “and I know John’s final wish was for you to enter the Mage Marshal Service.”
Night Fear wiped her tears. “Will it help me avenge my parents’ deaths?”
“In time, we can consider that.”
Night Fear nodded. “Then I want to become a Mage Marshal for I will not rest until I destroy all magic.”
CHAPTER 8
Hydra stepped out of the mirror and fell to her knees before Queen Hera.
“Majesty, I failed you,” Hydra said and with a trembling hand presented her Queen with the hilt of her Entity Sword. She bowed her head, revealing the back of her neck. “Do with me as you must.”
Hera took Hydra’s Entity Sword. And held it above her assassin’s neck. With a swift, violent arc, she struck at Hydra. But the blade never touched her bodyguard. Instead, she snatched it away at the last possible moment.
Hydra dared to glance up. “Majesty?”
“Arise, Hydra.”
Hydra hesitated. “I don’t understand. Have I not failed you?”
Hera let an icy smile escape. She tossed Hydra’s sword to the ground. “All has gone according to my plan.”
“Your plan?”
“Star Marshal Scar has taken Night Fear under her wing just as I predicted she would.”
Hydra narrowed her eyes. “What’s so special about the brat?”
“Come,” Hera said and led Hydra to the Star Coven chamber of the Grimoire. They stood before the sealed book of Life. Hera drew her own Entity Sword and touched the blade against the locked seal, causing the Grimoire to open.
The pages emitted a soft blue mist.
Hera said, “Grimoire, speak of the prophecy of Night Fear.”
A low voice emanated from the pages of the Grimoire and said, “The Nec Lords seek one who’s power shall surpass their own. One who shall be named after the curse of nightmares.”
“None is more powerful than the Nec Lords,” Hydra said. “How can this be?”
“It is written a Wyrdra child shall be fathered by a human and thus unlock the genetic secrets of the Wyrdra.”
“What secrets?” Hydra asked.
The Grimoire remained silent.
Hydra repeated her question. The Grimoire groaned, “Only the possessor of my Entity Sword shall know.”
Hera smiled. “Tell her.”
The Grimoire groaned once more. “In Night Fear it is foretold a raw power unlike any known before shall be greater than the Nec Lords. Whosoever controls Night Fear, controls the destiny of the Universe.”
Hera turned to Hydra. “I had to know,” Hera said, “if the daughter of Shadow Walker was the one. It seems she played her part well. As did you, daughter.”
“You knew from the beginning?” Hydra asked.
“I arranged for Mage Marshal Wolf to intercept a message that spoke of Night Fear’s proposed marriage to the Nec Lords.”
“You wanted him here? Why?”
“Wolf was to be the catalyst to set in motion the prophesy. Ensure Night Fear was adopted by the Mage Marshal Service.”
“As your spy?”
Hera shrugged. “As so much more.”
“Night Fear was very convincing. She fooled me,” Hydra said and balled her hands into fists.
“No one knew. Least of all, Night Fear herself.”
“Then how do you intend to control her?”
Hera instructed Grimoire to explain.
The Grimoire groaned and said, “The Nec Lords tasted Night Fear’s blood, and in so doing infected her body with a spell-curse that shall act as a virus. Slowly taking control of her mind. Through the natural born curse that named her, through her nightmares, the Nec Lords shall take control, piece by piece of Night Fear in the unguarded moments of her dream world.”
Hydra shook her head, “And what if Night Fear learns to control her own dreams? Did your cunning plan think of that?”
“She is a poor student,” Hera said. “I assured her failure in that regard by commanding the most overbearing and bullying of the Familiars to guide her. And now she is without her familiar, she is alone. She will trust the Mage Marshals. The humans’ mistake is they rely too heavily on Spell-Tech and as such cannot hope to detect our Nec Lords’ intervention.”
“And what’s the end goal?” Hydra asked.
“We shall bide our time and learn the weaknesses of the humans. Finally, we shall defeat them and all the other races that despise us.”
