Anand choked.
“What did you say?”
“£100,000. It’s the market rate for someone with your skills. We think it’s more than fair, given that you'll be living here, in India. And the cost of living is rather lower here than in the UK.”
The man was smiling when he said this. He knew that in comparison to the pathetic salary which Anand was on until today, that £100,000 was an unimaginable fortune.
One of the men in the car handed Anand a bottle of water. Anand took a sip.
“Is this for real?” Anand asked, wiping his mouth.
“As real as can be. It’s a job, like most others, but perhaps a little more interesting, and something worth getting up for every day. We think it'll keep you motivated.”
Anand was smiling from ear-to-ear.
“So, Anand Mhasalkar, tell me. Are you in, or are you out?”
Anand laughed.
“I’m in, but with two conditions. And they're both non-negotiable.”
The man frowned.
“And what would they be?”
“First, you promise to buy me two tickets to go to see Hibernian Football Club play in Easter Road in Edinburgh, to meet the team afterwards, and to let me kick a ball from the centre of the pitch.”
“Two tickets? Who is the other for?”
“My friend Jonathan Stuart. He’s dead. He won’t be coming. But I want to take his ticket with me.”
“Agreed. I’m sure we can arrange that. And what is the second condition?”
“You tell me your name.”
“My name?” The man laughed. “It’s Ray. Ray Luck.”
