  acknowledgments

I have a debt of gratitude to four friends who assisted the birth of this book.

Filippo Ceccarelli read it and discussed it with the passion and scrupulousness that are the hallmark of his life and work.

With Gianni Riotta, I have for years walked down the street in the evening talking about the 1970s, terrorism, and the need for me to write what I feel. He encouraged me and supported this project every time I was tempted to put it on the back burner.

Luigi Contu and Michele Fusco were always there every time that the tempests of politics and journalism were unleashed on my family. They helped me to react, to reflect, and to choose how I wanted to respond. Their advice has always been precious and their presence has given me the gift of serenity.
