  Author’s note

The fight for ownership of Stoneleigh Abbey continued for years and Jane’s brother James did receive a share in the compensation given to those who had a claim when the legal battle reached its end.

Rev Leigh employed Mr Repton to convert the grounds around Stoneleigh Abbey and Jane mentioned Mr Repton in Mansfield Park quoting the exact price her cousin had paid.

Mr Leigh inherited Stoneleigh Abbey from his uncle in 1813 and afterwards it passed to his son Chandos Leigh, who was a good friend of Lord Byron. Chandos Leigh was awarded a Baronetcy in 1839 and became 1st Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh.

We know that Jane Austen visited her family home at Stoneleigh Abbey through a letter which her mother wrote during their stay. We know from that letter that Jane loved it there and laughed frequently, especially over Lady Saye and Sele. But we can only guess at how much Stoneleigh Abbey influenced the manuscripts which would most likely have travelled with Jane, and those that she wrote in the years following her visit. Yet the story of Elizabeth Wentworth is true, and the chapel described in Mansfield Park is identical to the chapel in the West Wing of Stoneleigh Abbey. The rest is open to imagination, just as it was open to Jane’s.

“Fans of War and Peace will relish this poignant novel of love and loss" - International bestselling and award winning historical author Nicola Cornick

Would you risk everything for love?

A race to Gretna Green is merely the beginning of a journey that leads across Europe, at a time when Europe has been ripped in two by war.

Naive and innocent, Lady Ellen Pembroke falls for a dashing young army officer. Captain Paul Harding has an easy, enchanting smile. His blue eyes glow with vibrancy and warmth. She is in love. In turn, the Captain's attention is captured by the beautiful daughter of the Duke of Pembroke. Finding Ellen is like discovering treasure within the burned, bloody soil of a battle field. His sanity clings to her - something beautiful to remind him that not all the world is ugly. She becomes someone to fight for and survive for when he is inevitably called to arms for the battle of Waterloo.

'Jane’s portrayal of the Battle of Waterloo and the feelings both Ellen and Paul had to go through are described excellently. As mentioned above, this book is a lot more heart-wrenching' - Heidi (The Lost Love of a Soldier)
