Liar's Market Page 30

by Taylor Smith

As for her, she was numb, carrying on only because Jonah needed her to. As she moved up the aisle in the church, Drum’s flag-draped coffin standing in front of the altar, she spotted Huxley and Tucker among the mourners. Jonah’s fingers lifted in a subtle wave, and Huxley nodded, smiling gently back at him. Then, his eyes met Carrie’s.

There was a world of meaning in that look, but she’d already told him to give her time. She needed to stand on her own feet for a while. She needed to help Jonah deal with his father’s disappearance and death. She wasn’t sure she ever again wanted anything to do with people in his line of work.

“I don’t have to do this for the rest of my days,” he told her. “I’ve been thinking myself that it might be time for a change. And if it’s England you don’t fancy, it’s not a problem. I can live anywhere.”

“You need to decide what you want for yourself, Mark,” she said. “Do what you need to do, and I’ll try to get Jonah and me back on some kind of even keel. Then if our paths should happen to cross again—”

“Oh, they will. Count on it.”

She’d nodded slowly. “Good. I hope they do. And we’ll see what happens then.”
