Afterword
The battle for Attu Island lasted from May 11th through May 30th, 1943. It is the only WWII battle that took place on sovereign American soil.
Although this novel is fiction, it does portray the miserable conditions and some of the actual combat situations that occurred. Most notably, Jarmin Pass and Point Able.
Colonel Yamasaki led the Japanese defense of Attu and personally led the nearly successful Banzai charge from the Chichagof Valley. It was one of the largest Banzai charges of the entire war.
The heroic stand of the 50th Engineers on Engineer Hill, actually occurred. Colonel Yamasaki’s body was found among hundreds of his soldiers, still clutching his sword.
Most of my research was gleaned from a wonderfully helpful book titled, The Capture of Attu: as told by the men who fought there by Robert Mitchell, Sewell Tyng, and Nelson Drummond. I recommend it.
