He shook his head, “Just give me the ten gold when you come back in two days.”

I said, “Thanks,” and we left the store. That went well, even if I couldn’t keep in touch with Gerard when we were separated.

We made one more stop at the human apocethary so I could pick up what I couldn’t get in Gwienidd. I still wasn’t ready to have kids yet, and guessed it would be a long while before I was.

We were on our way back to the horses when Edea choked out, “My cousin tried to murder you in your sleep?”

Oh, right, she’d been in the dungeon at the time.

I nodded, “Yes. He only failed because he got fancy, and tried to use a tree.”

  Edea sighed, “Sorry.”

I shook my head, and bumped hips, “Not your fault Edea. He’s not worth regrets, trust me on that. I’m hoping we’ll be friends for a very long time.”

  Edea asked teasingly, “How long?”

I laughed, “For longer than you’d believe.”

Centuries. I was a super. It would be nice to have one friend I didn’t have to watch grow old and die, and Edea was one of the good ones. One of the few people it was a real pleasure for an empath to be near. I tried not to think about the age thing much. Especially regarding Gerard. What Ayda was going through, that was my future, but I wouldn’t borrow grief from my future and destroy my present. I loved him, and he owed me a wedding, or two if he really wanted that second one with Ictia’s cleric.

I smiled, it would be good to see him. I couldn’t wait to see the surprise on his face…
