Her Shadow Page 24

by Aimée Thurlo

Holding her tiny daughter, Lanie looked up, her eyes weary but filled with joy. “Shadow is a great medic, but having a midwife around would be wonderful. I hope you’re planning to set up an office here in town.”

Marlee smiled. “Already planning on the next baby, are you?”

Lanie laughed. “Well, my daughter will need brothers and sisters.”

“Have you settled on a name for her?” Marlee asked.

“Hope. It’s what Four Winds offers everyone whose motives are right.”

Marlee nodded. “It’s a good name.” Giving the child a kiss, Marlee walked outside, leaving the family to celebrate their new addition.

Lucas followed her a moment later. “Listen to what your heart is telling you.” He turned her to face him. “We belong to each other. Four Winds has offered us a gift, but we both have to accept it.”

Marlee fought the tears that stung her eyes. “I do believe in your love for me. We’ve come too far for me to doubt you.” Deliberately she moved her hair aside and touched her scar. “But are you really ready to live with this reminder of my past, waking to it every morning, seeing it every night?”

He pulled something out of his pocket, then took one step back. “If my face was scarred like yours, is that all you’d see when you looked at me?” In a flash, Lucas flicked open the blade of his knife, then pressed the steel to his face. A trickle of blood began where the tip dug into his skin.

With an anguished cry, Marlee pulled his hand away, then sighed with relief, seeing the wound wasn’t deep. “Maybe it’s time to stop thinking and just let our love guide us,” she said, stepping into his arms.

He held her tightly against him. “I couldn’t have put it better myself, my heart.”

Lucas heard his brother inside the house laughing and celebrating with his wife and new daughter. It was a time for healing and new beginnings in Four Winds. Most important of all, it was a time for love.
