  Chapter Eight

I wasn’t asleep but coming out of that wonderfully blank dream world. The first thing I noticed was that there were soft, silk-like sheets beneath me and a warm body in front of me. Lover. Last night came flying back and I smiled. His hair was damp like he’d taken another shower. We were both naked with the comforter covering our hips. Damn, my body felt good. I had one arm haphazardly thrown over Lover’s torso so I tightened my hold until I felt him start to wake.

“Good morning.” His voice was slurred from sleep.

We both shifted slightly so he could move to his back. “Looking good enough to eat.” I kissed his cheek—the one that wasn’t red and stitched up. “I’ve wanted to wake up beside you for more years than I care to admit.”

“We could have if you weren’t so fucking stubborn.”

I chuckled. He was right, again. I did have a streak of bullheadedness.

Lover faced me. “You okay with what we did?”

  I nodded.

“I won’t let it interfere with the club decisions.”

“I know. You have a good head on your shoulders...and between your legs,” I added with a wink.

“Yeah, you seemed to like it last night.” Lover was smiling, moving so his head was resting on my chest.

“That I did.” I kissed his forehead.

There was the slightest knock on the door like knuckles tapping the frame.

“What?” I yelled, my mood souring.

“We have word from Justice,” Whip said quietly. “He’s whole.”

Shit. Forgot about that. “Good.” I groaned and it wasn’t in pleasure. “Next chance we get, I’m going to pull my pants down and make you suck my dick.”

  Lover grinned. “I can’t wait.”

I took a quick shower and got dressed in some of Lover’s stuff. They were too tight in the chest area and the jeans slightly short on my frame. Eh, they’d do. I wasn’t trying for a beauty parade. Today we were recovering in the clubhouse. Working on hover bikes, stocking the bar, looking for new prospects. When I came out of the bathroom, Lover was on the bed, slipping on boots. The door was wide open. I didn’t walk out it. instead, I went to the window and clicked the holographic curtain open. It revealed the city in the glow of dawn. Light started to show on the walls of dark buildings. The city wasn’t awake yet. Everyone was still comfortable in their beds dreaming. But beyond our street, before the brightening sky, was the soft white smoke, the smoldering remains of the auction house.

Lover came up from behind me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and kissed my back. “Do you love me?”

I used this club as a shield. As armor to keep happiness out but Lover had a way of slipping underneath, right to my heart. “Always have. Always will.”
