Letters to Jane (Mississippi Book 1) Page 10

by Brooke Miller

After two rings, a male voice came over the line, “Is it done?” She shifted, her stance unconsciously being protective and cautious.

“Yes, no one questioned why it was a closed casket, thankfully. Jane is flying out with the casket tonight. By then the investigation should be completed.”

A pause then a heavy sigh came over the line, “Does she know the crash was meant for her?”

“No, and her Captain’s been informed not to tell.”

Because Jane would tear this town part to find out who did it, she thought.

A throat being cleared brought her out of her thoughts, “Have you found him yet? The police won’t tell me anything.”

She sighed inwardly, she had found something and it wasn’t good. But until she had more proof and better evidence, she wasn’t going to say anything.

“No, not yet. Some of the boys that saw him last are going to be at a party tomorrow night. I’m going see what I can find out. I’ll let you know what I find when I get in. Take care.”

She disconnected the call and made her way back inside and to the viewing room. She caught a glimpse of her reflection in a hall mirror. She saw the sadness, the grief, as you would expect on the face of a woman that was burying a woman that was like a sister to her. She reached the room where Alex’s viewing was going on, and she saw her grief-stricken family threw the room.

As Jane embraced her, she knew it was best to keep Jane out of the loop on the investigation into Alex’s death.

Because no one-especially Jane- could know that Alex’s accident had been no accident.
