Soul of the Sacred Earth Page 40

by Vella Munn

  White. Sacred.

Shivering, he dug his feet into the hard soil hoping to stop and think about what had happened, but the wind grew teeth that clamped onto him, propelling him on.

A prayer pounded through him, but it was gone before he could give voice to the words. Something fastened itself around his throat and he thought he might choke, yet he couldn’t concentrate on that. Couldn’t concentrate on anything except the need to continue moving.

  • • •

A sound now, like a hundred distant drums.

  No. Not drums but . . .

Floating, he spread his arms so the wind could more easily support him and lifted his head so he could see where he was being propelled. His weight, which could break through an iced pond, had evaporated and yet he didn’t feel vulnerable or helpless. The prairie stretched around him without end and the dry grasses that fed the buffalo were so long that he might become lost in them if he fell; but he had no fear that the wind would stop carrying him—he trusted, listened, saw.

He’d become a bird, had been given the gift of flight even though he had arms and not wings, and those arms were taking him closer and closer to . . .

Horses. Tens upon tens of them.

With strong legs and bright eyes.

  Waiting for him.

  About the Author

Vella Munn is the author of at least sixty fiction books (she gave up trying to keep track) and burst onto the local scene by writing and illustrating a comic book with the Lone Ranger’s horse Silver as the hero. Her readership of one, her younger sister, wisely praised it. Since then Vella has written everything from category romance, to man against nature, to one young adult, to romantic suspense, to Native American historicals. She also writes erotic romance under a closely guarded pen name. The mother of two, grandmother of four, wife of one, and servant to two rescue dogs, she excels in avoiding shopping and embracing country living.

Her series include the Soul Searchers, the Soul Survivors, Montana Lakeside, and Feral Justice, among others.

When not writing, she thinks about writing, gets walked by her dogs, loves her family, and digs in the garden.
