“What! What did you do?”
“I know we planned at Thanksgiving to all get together, but I thought it was such a great thing to do, and I kind of had a germ of the idea that I wanted to propose to you while we were here, and I started to think how nice it would be if it was just us up here in the mountains alone. So, when I told them, they were all cool with not coming.”
“They knew you were going to propose before I did?”
“Uh, yeah.” He actually looked embarrassed. “I kinda had to have a good reason for them not to come. Lake and Dan were really into being here for Christmas.”
Damn, how did he manage to look more handsome when he blushed?
“I’m amazed she was able to keep the secret that long.”
Baz’s look was a bit rueful. “Yeah, well, I think it was easier for her to hide it from you since Dan didn’t tell her the real reason until after we’d gotten here and I’d… um… confiscated your cell phone.”
Tira tsked at him, putting her hands on her hips angrily.
He put his fingers up, index and thumb about an inch apart. “Just a little bit. And for a very good reason.”
“Well… I suppose you could make that argument,” she agreed reluctantly.
All traces of contrition left him as he realized that she wasn’t really pissed at him for his little deceptions, reaching out to haul her into his arms. “Yes, I guess you could, my dear,” he growled.
“I suppose I forgive you…”
“You suppose?” he repeated back to her, eyebrows at his hairline in indignation.
“Yes. Especially since I have a surprise for you of my own.”
“You do?” He looked startled.
Tira reached into her pocket and handed him the ring box.
Baz looked stunned, his usually tanned face blanching white. “You’re-you’re giving it back to me?”
She hadn’t thought about how her gesture might look to him. “No! NO, I am NOT giving it back to you.”
He sighed audibly in relief.
“I’m giving it to you so that you can put it on my finger. I want you to do that, it’s tradition.”
Before she finished her sentence, he fell immediately to one knee in front of her, putting the ring on her finger then kissing it and her finger reverently, reaching up to draw her against him, growling, “Mine.”
Tira wrapped her arms around his head, which was just about at chest level to her. She repeated back to him obediently, while holding him to her as tightly as she could and hoping that she was doing the right thing despite the depths of her feelings for him. “Yes, yours.”
Then she took a deep breath, leaned a bit away from him so that she could look him in the eye, and made herself say it, because she most certainly meant it. “I love you, Baz.”
He was stunned, and she felt an almost unsettling sense of accomplishment underneath all of the other potent feelings she had for him that she was allowing to surge through her for the first time.
He lifted her up above him and whirled around with her, and she giggled the entire time, knowing he would keep her safe at all costs.
Then she heard the door shut and lock, as he let her slide slowly down the length of him, reaching down to pull her shirts – all four of them at once – off of her, growling almost unintelligibly, “We’ll go home later,” as he chased her into the bedroom.
