"And what of Doon? You know he is hot-headed. He cannot handle-"
"Trust your father, Kesh, and all will be well."
Trust his father. The words were bitter to his ears. He had been made to trust that man for many hard years, but had his father ever taken one snatch of a second to hear his ideas, his war strategies, his insights into the political moves that would best serve the kingdom?
Kesh clenched and unclenched his fist. Then in accordance with old ways, he reverted to his former behaviors and allowed his mother to arrange for a meeting with his father.
His father agreed to see him immediately.
The old man was visibly restrained himself when Kesh sat down across from him in the chambers the inn had prepared for him. The maroon curtains of old, and Sholak beads draped the small space in his usual adornments. His father was a king wherever he sat, but he had an unusual gleam in his eyes as he looked to Kesh now.
"You've done well."
Kesh swallowed his shock, carefully training his expression – maybe even waiting for the other shoe to drop.
"Have you heard me, son?"
"Thank you, Father."
A smile ticked the king's mouth. Tarik had the same smile. He favored his father so completely it was uncanny. The same glint of assurance. The cool, confident demeanor.
"You worry over your brother. Do not. Han has read Ayanu. We know where he has gone. If he finds anything there, he will not be alone in doing so."
Kesh's eyes widened, and he raised his head to meet his father's gaze.
"You're not... The Threk?"
His father's brows rose and fell.
"What other way but to show those red-eyed beasts what our blood is truly made of?"
Kesh's heart thudded in his chest, and he jumped at the click of the door.
His father casually glanced over his shoulder, and a warm smile broke across his face.
"Our princess miracle. Welcome."
Kesh turned to meet Ayanu's eyes, his heart bursting with relief to see the calm in them. A smile that brought out what could only be described as bliss to shine in her gaze fell on him, and at the king's beckoning she took a seat beside Kesh.
"How is your father these days, Ayanu?"
A glint took Ayanu's eyes.
"He's well, your majesty. Thank you for your concern."
A sure satisfaction glinted the king's eyes.
"I'm sure he is beside himself with joy and strongly determined to see that the scourge of savages is vanquished once and for all."
"He is, your majesty."
"Father."
"I'm sorry, your-"
"Call me father. It is time for our families come together in unity, don't you think?"
Kesh's heart nearly burst in his chest, and his fingers laced with Ayanu's, squeezing as their energies joined, sharing the relief, and hope that made them dizzy with disbelief.
Neither of them could have predicted it, but here they were at the helm of the war table that would save a great many women and men from the capture of the galaxy's worst.
"Han wonders if you would like to do the honors raising the Threk, Prince Kesh."
Pride swelling in his chest, Kesh strained to maintain objectivity.
Stars, yes.
Stars, yes, he would honored to raise the Threk battalion that would swallow the acquisitioners whole.
His eyes found Ayanu before he answered, though. Intent on knowing her thoughts. It mattered easily more to him than his father's sudden approval.
"Will you stand by my side, Ayanu?"
"I could not imagine being anywhere else, Kesh."
His joy at hearing the words glazing his eyes, Kesh turned his gaze to his father.
To his king.
"I will raise them."
