Mr. Granger and Angela laughed at Joel’s joke and stood up. “Mr. Granger was just giving me these.” She showed her husband the ornaments.
“My, those are…appreciated.” Angela giggled at his word choice. What was a man supposed to say about pretty little Christmas baubles? “Next year you can put them on our own tree,” he added.
“That’s right.” Mr. Granger slapped Joel on the shoulder. “And I’m sure it will be beautiful.”
Angela smiled up at Joel. She was eager to be alone with him. Mr. Granger’s relationship with her mother had reminded her how fleeting life and love are and that no tomorrows were guaranteed. “I’m ready to retire, Joel. Join me?”
“Oh, yes, ma’am.”
“Well, I think I’ll have a bite of something sweet and enjoy the tree for a few minutes. You two young ’uns have a good night.”
Angela started to walk away, but stopped and laid a hand on Mr. Granger’s heart. “Thank you.”
The rancher grasped her fingers for an instant, winked, then slipped past her to pluck a candy cane from the tree.
