Confessions of a Teenage Slayer (Sister Witchcraft Book 2) Page 9

I gave him a shy smile and he gave me one back.

“See you in a bit,” I said, and headed home.

Before I could go to the newspaper office and help Max, I thought I’d better have a word or two with Sybil. She’d heard the news through the grapevine, but she wasn’t sure what to think of it all.

“There were no demons involved here,” I told her firmly. “The uncle has confessed. He killed his nephew, Richie, because he was always so hostile toward the birds. He suspected that he’d been the one who sabotaged his flock in the past, let them all go that time and ruined his entire operation. And he was threatening to do so again, at least in Norm’s mind. And that he could not allow.”

  “How do you know?”

“He said so. All evidence lines up with his statements. What makes you still suspect demons are involved?”

She hesitated, bit her lip, then decided to lay it out on the line.

“You understand why I borrowed Max’s telephoto lens camera?” she said, but didn’t give me time to answer. “I needed it to help build a photo document account of just who is in town and who isn’t. I took pictures of everyone at Richie’s funeral that I could get into focus. My friends from those days—I’ve been on the phone to them constantly since Richie died-- are analyzing them now. We need to know who is here from fifteen years ago when we were the young guardians and fought for freedom from demons for this town.”

My head was swimming. Someday, I knew we would get into this in depth, but for now, I just needed to know one thing.

“Can you give me the memory card? Max needs it.”

“Oh. Sure.” She pulled it out of her pocket and plunked it down in my hand. “I got off everything I needed.”

“Good. But leave the police work to the police,” I said.

She shook her head, her eyes dark and tragic. “You still don’t understand. It’s not like I have any choice.”

That scared me. “Okay, but you can’t assign demon qualities to clients Gary brings home. That way lies madness and worse. You can’t let yourself get hysterical.”

She hesitated, then nodded. “You’re right, of course. Don’t worry. I won’t do that again. That was crazy, and I’m not crazy. You do understand that?”

  “Sure. I believe in you.”

“Good. But Mimi, if I’m called to battle demons, it’s my duty to answer that call. And it could happen again. For real this time.”

I swallowed hard. “You’re my sister and I want you to be safe.”

She smiled and kissed my cheek. “Yes,” she said. “So do I.”

I wasn’t entirely convinced, and as I left, I vowed to talk to her about this again, maybe later when feelings weren’t so raw. In the meantime, I had a paper to whip into shape. I was looking forward to that one.

  Hey, Max needed me.
