I almost drop the grilled cheese I'm plating while holding Adam, our one-year-old, on my hip as I get lunch ready. Eli comes in with bags of what looks like puppy supplies.
“What happened to getting the car washed?” I ask Eli as Emily walks past us to the backyard.
“Dad caved,” Eli shrugs as he puts the bags down.
“Of course he did,” I mutter. When it comes to Emily, he folds like a bad hand every time. Speak of the devil, Pierce walks in, purposely not making eye contact, but instead looks at Adam.
“And how’s my little man doing?” He comes up to me and takes Adam, giving him a few kisses. Eli takes some dog toys and joins Emily in the backyard.
“Wait,” I call after Pierce before he can make it to the door to follow them. He sighs and places Adam in the playpen near the living room.
He turns around and finally looks at me. He knows he's in trouble. “Pierce Thorne, did you seriously buy our daughter a puppy after I specifically told you to wait until we can talk about it?” I narrow my eyes at him.
He lets out a deep breath, giving up. “I know Diana, but she got to me.” He pleads and I just roll my eyes. Emily has him wrapped around her little finger.
“What was it this time? Did she say -you're the best daddy ever? That she loves you the most?” I ask as I continue getting lunch ready.
“That she’d name the puppy Steve McQueen.” I can't help it, I burst out laughing and Pierce gives me the stink eye.
“And did she?” I ask once I calm down.
“Kind of,” he huffs out.
“What do you mean?” I ask as I walk to the table and put the food out for everyone.
“His name is Princess Steve McQueen, Princess for short.” He doesn’t sound too impressed.
Again, I can't help but laugh. “She got you, didn’t she?”
“Too smart for her own damn good.” I feel him walk behind me then he wraps his arms around me. “Just like her mother,” he growls into my ear.
I turn in his arms, wrapping mine around his neck. “Or maybe you’re a big softy when it comes to the women in your life.” I smile at him.
He gives me a horrified face. “Don’t call her a woman. She’s my baby girl, and she's staying that way,” he demands, believing because he says so it‘ll happen.
I giggle until he takes my mouth in a hungry kiss, which I return with just as much passion. After all these years we are still as in love as when we first met.
I wasn’t expecting him, wasn’t planning on him, but the day I stepped into his office he changed my whole life. He’s my salvation, and I'm his. We saved each other, and continue to do so every day of our lives.
The End.
