“Hello, prettiest Black,” she sweet talked him, snatching the cup from and taking a sip. He growled, baring his fangs.
“I’ve killed men for less, Precious.”
“Luckily, I’m not a man,” she looked up as the others noticed her in the room. James’s gentle smile came over his face, and he held out his arm for her. She went, willingly, burying her face in his chest and hugging him tight.
“Good morning, my dear,” he said, pulling her hair back from her face. “Did you sleep well?”
“I did. When did you get up?” she asked, taking another sip of coffee. James normally got up before her, not in need of any sleep for months if he chose. But they had fallen asleep so late, she half thought he’d still be there.
“Not long ago,” he closed his eyes a moment, revelling in her touch. James was subtle, his motto about nobility and honour, but sometimes he could catch him at the right moment where she knew he loved her. “I slept well.”
“Shields tend to do that to Vampires,” she smiled, backing up to let him finish dressing. He gave her a soft look, as if he didn’t want the cuddling to end. That wasn’t like the old James; normally he was all about a lack of PDAs “We make you human enough to be exhausted.”
“That explains it,” he said, turning back to the mirror as he finished knotting his tie.
She looked around the living room, a sense of happiness filling her. The girl who bell longed to no one, who loved no one and no one loved her, had finally found everything that she ever wanted. A loving husband, a permanent place to unpack her suitcase, and in-laws to torment until no end. And when the time came, she would join them in immortality.
