They’d shared everything equally. Always. Until now.

Rurik’s eyes were blue-grey ice. “I promised to see all of you well-placed. I will see it done.” He paused, looking at each man. “Do you doubt me?”

Gunnar’s shoulders dipped. Erik and Thorfinn took more interest in their plates. Thorvald busied himself eating his bread.

“Think about what’s before us,” Bjorn said, selecting a blackberry. “We need to secure the Seine at Rurik’s holding and get ready for winter.”

Nods of assent were slow. Thorvald scratched his chest, grunting, “Makes sense.”

“Gyda is gentle. Full of lofty ideas, but she is a woman...a thrall.” He chewed the berry, its late season tartness bursting in his mouth. “Never let a woman mess with your mind.”

Satisfied with that wisdom, Bjorn tore off a piece of bread from the round loaf. His appetite was back. The black abyss that Mabon brought was closing. He almost missed the men looking behind him. Shifting on the bench, his spine tingled when a woman’s mildly amused voice reached his ears.

“I’m sorry to hear that Bjorn of the Forgotten Sons. I’ve traveled a long way to present you with an idea...the kind that could make you a wealthy, powerful man.”

  About the Author

Gina was destined for historical romance the moment her mom read The Highwayman aloud to her. Lush Viking romance and sensual Georgian romance is her happy place. Her books offer an addictive spin full of witty banter and sexual tension.

She grew up in southern California and despite all that sunshine, Gina prefers crumbling castles and musty museums. Her motto for family vacations is “The older and moldier, the better.” Now she lives in Michigan with her favorite alpha male, Brian, and their two sons, where she occasionally gardens and cooks like people did in the old days. She blogs about it too. Peek into the past on Gina’s History Thursday blogs where she explores How to Eat Like a Viking and other adventures.
