Sarah smiled. It was good to be grateful for who you are and work with the talents you were given.
It was time to get serious. It was time to get mean. It was time to antagonize people to get results.
Sarah’s life was about to get darker and she was ready. It didn’t matter how dark. If anything, she deserved a little darkness in her life after what she had done to Parkman.
Maybe one day she would rekindle her ability to be trusted by honorable men like him. Maybe one day she could hold her head up high, look him in the eye and feel that she deserved his love.
But first, she had to prove it to herself, and Vivian said she would.
In time.
Sarah gunned the engine, feeling the vibration work through the seat between her legs as she pulled out to pass a slow-moving semi.
Her hands tightened on the handlebars.
It was time to do a lot of good things to make up for the one terrible thing she had almost done. What she had just gone through was only a preparation stage for what was coming in Kelowna, Vivian had said. Knowing that, Sarah looked forward to the challenge.
“Bring it on.”
She hit the gas again, felt the wind push her back, and cried at the freedom coursing through her.
Someone once told her the most powerful thing in the world was the freedom to say no. She believed that and embraced it.
But what freedom meant for her was the ability to say yes, to walk into the fight and keep moving forward. That was what she intended to do.
She would never stop moving forward and she would never abandon Vivian again.
Until it killed her.
Dear Reader,
During the winter of 2011, when my wife and I were living in Greece, we lived in Agios Adrianos, the same village where Oliver Payne escaped to in the beginning of the novel. The walk into Nafplio that Oliver took that fateful morning when Captain Elias Kostas picked him up, under the relentless sun of southern Greece, was the very same walk Brenda and I would do. During these walks we would make up impromptu stories of tension and drama. Oliver running away from Violeta and her hunting him, even the missing passport in his villa, was one of my stories. I discovered, the best stories for Brenda, the ones that made her shiver, were the ones that I made personal. So I asked her what would she do if we went back to our villa and discovered the passports missing and the police were looking for us and my ex-wife was after us …
Well, you get the picture.
That story never left me.
Lina and Sugar Spell Spa are both real. She is the owner of the elegant spa mentioned in the novel and she is a family friend. I recommend her spa if you, dear reader, ever find yourself in Nafplio, Greece. Say hello from Jonas and his wife when you go. You will make Lina smile.

In Killing Sarah, I wanted to explore the feeling of killing her off. Not actually killing her off from the series, but taking her out of the picture for a while.
I felt it important before the series went on for another couple of dozen novels, that you, the reader, got to see how Aaron felt about her, how Parkman would die for her if need be, and how Darwin was watching, listening, and had resources to snatch her away and maintain anonymity.
The people around Sarah, her friends and family, don’t always get their due.
In addition to that, I wanted you to see a side of Sarah that people don’t always see, which is the side that I see. With her fast-paced, tension-filled life, that side doesn’t come out all that often. I wanted you to see a softer Sarah, a nurturing Sarah, one that is human on every level, who cries, has weaknesses and cares about the people around her and not just the people she strives to save from fate.
As one of us, Sarah has flaws. She isn’t always right. Mistakes can happen and she made a huge mistake with Parkman. How she feels about that, as you probably detected at the end of the novel, is horrible. She almost feels that she can’t face him, redeem herself, or ever make up for it. Having almost killed the man who has spent years being there for her, backing her up, just because she missed the entry wound detail has mortified her. All she had to do was realize that the bullet had entered from behind. All she had to do was think. How many people make mistakes without thinking? How many people lose someone in their life through self-sabotage? How many people struggle with the relationships in their lives?
Sarah, in my opinion, is one of us. The only difference is tenacity. I’ve got an attitude. Sarah’s got an attitude. We all have an attitude. Whether it’s kind to others or rough, we all have an opinion.
With Sarah, she just wants everyone to love one another, be nice, and stop the hatred. The only way to do that is through education and Sarah is a teacher. Unorthodox, but she is one. Sarah teaches through accountability and consequence. Do a harmful thing to someone else, pay for that. Become someone who is harmful, die for that.
In Sarah’s world, there is no in between, no half measures. That’s why in her mind, Parkman had to pay for what he did. When she found out he wasn’t guilty, she now has to pay for that.
Sarah understands there are two elements involved in committing an act of violence or a crime. In Latin it’s called mens rea, and actus reus, which simply means, the intent to commit the act, and then the performance of the act itself.
With Parkman, she already had the intent and was very close to doing the act. The intent isn’t just halfway there for Sarah; it’s a box already checked off.
But now Sarah is on her way to Kelowna and things are back to the way they were in The Enigma and The Vigilante. Sarah and Vivian have their work cut out for them and things are going to get serious from here on in.
Hold on to yourselves because we’re going for a ride. Sarah and I are happy you’re coming along …
Be well and get caught reading,
Love as always,
Jonas Saul
