“Hundreds of years of practice show,” Maddie half groaned as he picked her up and put her on the sofa on her back, arms thrown above her head.
“No,” Rex said, “it’s you and me, we fit.” And he wasn’t wrong. Rex slipped into her like Cinderella finding her lost slipper. It was better than the madness and the speed of the morning. It was slow, intentional, a little sleepy, but all them. All there. Full body. It was like sunshine after winter, though that probably wouldn’t be the same for a while. It was natural and right. And that was the thing Maddie needed most now, after all day believing herself an aberration.
She wrapped her legs around her lover’s hips and flipped them over. Rex smiled up at her, loopy, boyish, beautiful. She traced the white in his hair with her fingers, and he groaned deeply as she moved, as she changed position slightly and got into a rhythm.
Maddie closed her eyes, and was just beginning to get totally lost, just beginning to see sound and taste colors, to ride the waves that were filling her up, ebbing and flowing and trying to reach a shore she had never experienced before, not like this, when she heard Rex, dimly, saying, “Maddie, I love you.”
Briefly, Maddie opened her eyes. She leaned over and kissed him, just lightly, and then, as if the kiss had been permission, she reached that shore. The pleasure came almost as a surprise, like it does sometimes when lovemaking is so good the end is not a thing anyone wants to reach, and Maddie gasped, even let out a surprised laugh, and beneath her Rex did much the same, bucking and moaning and then, when they were both spent, pulling her down to kiss her soft and long.
Finally, when the sex was over and they both stopped shaking, Maddie said, “Bed?” and Rex nodded, as tired, clearly, as she was. They stood, and Maddie snapped off the lights. “Curtains,” she said, “we have to remember…”
“Got it,” came Rex’s voice. “This place is so small I can reach them from here.”
“Hey! No mockery!” Maddie chided.
In bed, Rex’s arms wrapped Maddie up. Sonny settled on the pillow beside her. “He likes you,” Maddie murmured. “He would be hiding if he didn’t. I guess he thinks you can stay.”
“We’re getting a bigger place,” Rex said, cuddling her harder.
“Oh yeah, do we need to get married for me to be your queen?” Maddie was half asleep. “Do vampires have families?”
Rex chuckled, kissed the back of her head. “Lessons in the morning,” he said. “We both have a lot to learn.”
In the dark, there was no sound of breath coming in and out. Maddie couldn’t feel a heartbeat against her back. But Rex was there, he was real, and they belonged to one another. It had been the strangest, the longest day of Maddie’s life, but finally she felt she hadn’t made a mess of anything. This was it. This was life, even if she wasn’t technically alive anymore.
