Blood of the Wolf Page 16

by Holly Evans

As my eyes grew heavy, the world was growing blurry. I felt the last stitch knot, and it was done. The veil was smooth and complete again. I’d saved the day. I allowed my eyes to close as I released the fabric of the veil and felt my head loll.

  Fifty-Three

I didn’t get my nap. Alasdair and Grayson despatched the hunters and came over to make sure Renée was still alive. She had a rather impressive head wound, but she was breathing. Grayson bound her and tossed her in the boot of the car while Alasdair checked me over with gentle touches. I leaned into him and let his scent envelop me. Maybe it wasn’t so bad having a life bond.

“I’m proud of you, Niko. You’re going to make one hell of a Guardian,” Alasdair said as he held my face.

I smiled at him while trying to make the lawn stop spinning.

“I’ll talk to Saoirse and try to get you initiated as soon as possible,” Alasdair said.

“I really want to sleep,” I said.

He laughed and helped me to my feet.

“Don’t worry, Grayson has some more food in the car.”

  I frowned.

  “That’s not sleep.”

  He kissed my temple.

  “You saved many wolves, Niko.”

  “Still not sleep,” I muttered.

I slept for two days after that. I woke up in the Galway flat with Alasdair pressed against my back, his warm breath curling against my neck. He woke when I stretched and arched back against him, feeling his strength in his hard body against mine.

“I could get used to this ‘saving the world’ thing,” I muttered.

The bed was warm and comfortable. I wasn’t ready to get up just yet. Alasdair kissed behind my ear.

“I’m glad to hear it, but first, you have to speak to Marrok Hawke.”

I tensed and buried my face in the pillow, only to hear Alasdair’s gentle laughter.

“He’s a good guy. He won’t hurt you.”

I groaned and shuffled into the living room to find Grayson making coffee in the kitchen.

“I hear I have to speak to your dad,” I said, eying the coffee pot.

“It’s Mom you have to watch out for,” Grayson said with that broad grin of his.

Alasdair walked past me and brushed his fingers over my hip as he did so.

“Saoirse has claimed me from Selene. I’m joining you guys. Alasdair said I could crash here while arrangements are made for my own apartment.”

For the first time in eight years, life was looking pretty good.
