Tulane swooped low and a blast of fire heated the air. Ware sprinted away from the flames, but he didn’t run from Tulane when the man landed past him and dismounted.
The fight resumed on the ground. Swinging his sword in measured blows at Tulane, Ware advanced. The heavy metal weapons they carried clashed repeatedly.
“You’re going to die, Pembroke.”
“I don’t think so. I have a lot to live for.” Ware swung and his sword glanced off Tulane’s.
“Kill her!” Tulane ordered his dragon.
Ware turned his head for a split-second. In disbelief, he watched Tulane’s dragon stalk Irisa. Tulane gave him a grin that bespoke triumph. Ware rushed headlong at the man, his sword cutting through the air with a whoosh and landing with a thud into Tulane’s body.
Tulane stared wide-eyed and defeated with an expression of surprise that he’d not won. His arrogance died with him.
Ware turned to fight Tulane’s beast.
Backed to the trees, Irisa hid behind the larger trunk as flames blasted against the bark.
“Stay there,” Ware instructed.
He circled to the blind side of the dragon and plunged his sword into the hind-quarters of the animal to gain his attention. The dragon’s tail whipped around and caught him by surprise, knocking him off his feet.
“Ware,” Irisa cried. “Watch out.”
A thunderous roar shook the ground from the opposite direction and Ware sat half-upright on the ground watching his dragon attack Tulane’s. The distraction was enough for him to get up and stab the evil beast in the chest. The pain weakened the dragon and he staggered forward. Ware’s dragon came forward, bit into the neck of their enemy and ended the life of Tulane’s dragon.
Ware stared at the animal as he took his last breath with an unusual whine. His dragon also watched and made a similar sound—sympathy?
“Ware,” Irisa’s voice made him turn around.
He opened his arms and caught her as she leapt at him. Lifting her up, he swung her around and hugged her tight. Irisa’s sob stopped him and he placed her on the ground.
“Are you hurt?” He looked down the length of her.
“No.” She shook her head as she laughed and cried. “I love you, Ware. I was so frightened the dragon would kill you.”
“You gave me a worry too when I saw you falling from the sky.”
“Ware, will you marry me?”
Ware raised a brow. “Should it not be me, asking for your hand, M’lady?”
“Don’t you want me?”
“I don’t know.” He rubbed his chin as if he needed to think about the answer, he’d give her. “Will you be a dutiful wife?”
“I promise you’ll never have a problem with me. I’ll respect your every decision.”
Ware laughed. “I sincerely doubt that, M’lady, but I’ll not hold you to your pledge. I want you just the way you are.” He gathered her close and kissed her for a long time.
While Irisa claimed obedience, he knew she had him right where she wanted. His heart bound to hers was a sure sign he’d be doing her bidding for eternity.
