Clarissa shook her head.
‘No, I didn’t think you did,’ Zach murmured, tugging her gently into his arms. ‘Will you let me show you how important to me you are? Do you think that maybe, at some point in the future, you could see yourself being my wife, even though you know that my investigative work with the Star Elite will take me away for weeks on end?’
‘I don’t care how long you need to be away as long as you stay safe. Having had first-hand experience of just how important your work is, I understand why you need to do it. Just promise me that you will always do everything you can to come home to me whenever you can,’ she whispered.
‘I adore you,’ he murmured, eyeing her lips with lascivious intent. ‘How could I not?’
‘I adore you too,’ she whispered, smiling up at him with all the love in her eyes she felt blossoming deep within her heart.
‘Damn it, marry me,’ he demanded suddenly. ‘Thank God you feel the same, or I would have to do something rash like kidnap you until you fell in love with me or something. Now that I know you feel the same way as I do, let’s not waste a moment of our futures. We both know how precious life is. Marry me. I don’t care where we live once we are married. If you don’t want to live in the house I own now then I can sell it so you can live closer to your aunt, but my house isn’t all that far away. It is only twenty or so miles. You can visit Bessie as often as you like. I am sure Frederick will insist upon it.’
Clarissa battled tears again and this time lost the war. Zach smiled at her and gently brushed the tears off her cheeks.
‘I can think of nothing I would like more,’ Clarissa whispered.
‘Forever?’
‘Together forever,’ she promised. ‘We have a long way to go but we have time.’
‘Time and a future,’ Zach murmured as he gazed lovingly down at her.
With that, Zach gave into temptation and sealed their engagement with a very loving yet very improper kiss which left nobody in any doubt about just how much he adored his future bride, including his future bride.
