  Chapter One

  Six Months Later

“COME ON, MAX, STRAIGHTEN up,” Taylor said, as he buttoned Max’s shirt preparing him for his big day. Then Taylor reached over to a table and handed Max a glass. “Here, drink this.”

Max glanced down at a glass of green stuff, tightened his jaw, and narrowed his eyes peering at the concoction in Taylor’s hand.

“Noah made it after he saw how much you drank last night, Max. He was thinking about you. He knows that Jami didn’t want you drinking and Jami’s going to be pissed with us. He’ll probably cancel our get together for game nights and forget meeting us at the bistro.”

“If you think I’m drinking that shit, you’re wrong. There’s nothing wrong with me.”

“Your eyes are red and you were in the restroom throwing up,” Taylor said, picking up his waistcoat and helping Max shrug his arms through.

Glancing over at Taylor, and thinking about Jami, Max sucked in a large breath and took the glass from Taylor’s hand, and drank it all down.

Max stood as if in a daze. “It’s nerves. Weren’t you nervous when you married Payton?”

“We had a small wedding remember. Just a few friends...”

Max cut Taylor off. “And a thousand guest your parent’s invited. Like now. I don’t know half of those fucking people out there and you’re wondering why I’m sick.” Max took his pants from Taylor and stepped into them.

  “Your socks.”

Max was going through the motions. His brain hadn’t quite caught up with reality.

“Now your shoes,” Taylor said holding them in his hands smiling at Max.

Max blinked at Taylor and shook his head. “Am I getting married today or is this a dream?” Max said staring at Taylor, as Taylor placed his off white boutonniere into Max’s buttonhole on his waistcoat.

“Trust me, you’re not dreaming. I’m sure you don’t want me in your dream fucking it up.”

“No because the only thing you can do in my dream with your height and those tattoos is be a football player, and as you well know, I like my man a little feminine who doesn’t wear boxers and briefs.”

“Between you and I, I didn’t always like my men six two and gorgeous like Payton. Sometimes a boy changes into a man and his taste changes with him. But I’m so happy now nothing could ruin that for me.”

“Now get your ass together, Max, put on your pants and let’s get out of this hotel, and get this day over with so I can go home and fuck my husband. I haven’t had him since...”

“Spare me the details, Taylor.” And then Max’s phone rang. “Let it go to voice mail,” Max said. “If it’s not Jami, I don’t want to be disturbed.”

Taylor picked it up before Max could turn it off.

  “It’s a text.”

“It better be important,” Max said.

Taylor picked up the phone, but before he could open the text, Max said, “Give it here, Taylor.”

Taylor reluctantly handed the iPhone over to Max. Max glanced down and gave out a sigh and looked in Taylor’s direction before he opened the email. He wanted to avoid this as much as possible but he willingly faced his fears.

  Max,

I just wanted to tell you that I’m sorry I couldn’t make your wedding. I tried but something came up. I just wanted to give you the good news and offer this as a wedding present. I’m not pregnant. I made a mistake once more. Please tell Jami I hope I didn’t cause you two any problems. Tell Jami I love him, and I hope he can forgive me.

  Madeline

After Max read it, he glanced up and smiled. Then Max turned off the phone. “This is the best fucking day of my life.” He grabbed Taylor and surprised him with a kiss on his cheek.

“Hold on, Max,” Taylor said pushing Max away. “If Payton had seen you kiss me he would have had a fit. That man of mine is so fucking jealous.”

“You can’t be serious,” Max said.

JAMI WRUNG HIS HANDS over and over, and then tightened his fist every few seconds, then he sat and stood and paced around the room looking out. He glanced around and watched the nurse wheel the twins to the room next to his for their evening nap and feeding.

He needed to relax he told himself and Chase had reassured him that if he didn’t he would sweat all over his beautiful off white jumpsuit and need another shower.

“It’s your wedding day, relax, and let me finish your hair and makeup,” Chase said as he pinned up the back of his hair into a French Bun. Just what Max needed something French, Jami thought as he tried to sit still when Chase circled him trying to get everything straight as Jami sat in his robe, with his legs crossed at the knees, and shaking his left leg.

As Chase passed Jami’s leg he tapped it with a brush.

“Stop.” And Jami would stop for a while and then started shaking his leg again.

“It’s either that are go to the restroom every second from nerves,” Jami said.

“Then shake your leg. You don’t want to pee in that little pipe cleaner you have stuck up your ass.”

  “A what?”

  “You know, your thong.”

Jami gave out a nervous chuckle. “When the fuck are you going to be finished so I can g
et dressed?”

“Looking pretty takes a few seconds. I could swipe some lip gloss over your pretty soft lips and you’ll look pretty, but you don’t want to look pretty on your wedding day. You need to look gorgeous, and seductive, and a little slutty.”

Jami rolled his eyes and said, “I think Max just wants pretty.”

“Men. They never know what they want. Getting your makeup right takes time.” Chase stood back slanting his head and narrowing his eyes with a lip brush in his hand. “You could have gotten someone else. It’s not like you can’t afford it,” Chase said stopping to look at his masterpiece and swiping lip gloss over Jami’s lips for the hundredth time.

“You know when I retire from dancing, I think I have a new profession. I can probably be a makeup artist for a magazine. Can you hook me up with someone? Or maybe I’ll take my talents to Hollywood and become makeup artist to the stars.”

Jami turned to Chase. “I think I know someone who will help you get started,” Jami said to Chase who he’d met at the BDSM club. They had struck up a friendship online shortly after that.

Chase had been dancing in San Francisco, and had agreed to help Jami find a designer when he arrived in New York. And good thing he arrived just in time to be there for Jami. “Don’t worry, you look wonderful. I wished it was me,” Chase said putting another touch of eye liner on Jami.

Looking in the mirror, Jami said, “Do you think it’s too much? Max likes me without all that makeup.”

“But you like makeup, don’t you?”

Jami grinned and shook his head yes as Chase poised the eyeliner and lipstick for another coat.

“Fuck it, Jami. It’s your day.” Chase added mascara to Jami’s long thick eyelashes. “Some men don’t know what the fuck they want. You have one of the good ones. Me, I got hooked up with someone who changes men like he changes his underwear, and unfortunately he changes them too often.” Chase gave out a nervous laugh.

“I know he’s terrific. But you’ll find someone. You’re still young and gorgeous. Who knows you could meet someone here.”

“Everyone here is old enough to be my daddy and the rest are married, but I could use a daddy considering I never knew mine.”

“I’m so sorry, but sometimes they’re over rated. Especially if you had one like mine,” Jami said.

Chase had begun to concentrate on what he was doing and that was to get Jami ready because it was almost time. He didn’t hear him or he never responded to Jami. Chase stood back with brushes in hand, but Jami had had enough. When Chase made another attempt to put lipstick on him, Jami said, “Stop.”

“I wish I had lashes like you,” Chase said placing the wand on the counter and sitting back gazing at his work of art. “Now you look more beautiful. You look downright gorgeous. With that underwear I gave you that I bought you from France, you will be a slut tonight.”

Jami stood and gave Chase a kiss on his cheek. “Thank you.”

“It’s time to go, Jami. You will never be as lovely and as happy as you are today. Enjoy it, and Chase helped Jami into his jumpsuit and then his skirt that tied at the waist and opened in the front to show the pants. “Now get your pretty ass out there and marry the man of your dreams. Don’t let him get away. Don’t do as I did.”

Jami walked away and when he looked back, he saw the pain on Chase’s face. He knew the hurt that he felt. When they faced timed, he would confide in Jami about how lonely, and dejected he felt about his lover taking a younger man, even when he was only twenty. If he threw him aside at twenty, Chase had asked Jami what his hopes for the future were. Jami talked to him all night and brought him back from the brink.

Looking at Chase’s sad face, Jami wished he knew someone he could introduce Chase to, but his circle of friends were very narrow, and they were Max’s friends and they were all married.

Jami walked down the stairs and met Maxwell Sr., and there was a surprised look in his eyes. His eyes narrowed and his smile broadened. He shook his head with a closed smile and said, “You look beautiful, Jami.”

Jami handed him his hand, and he took it and placed it under his arm. “I’m nervous.”

“I know how you feel. I’m nervous too. It’s been a long time since I’ve done this. You know Max’s mother and me, we had a large wedding. And Max was there in her stomach. I bet he doesn’t know that.”

“I think he knows now, and that makes him happy. You have made him happy by doing this for the both of us,” Jami said. They straightened up and waited for the orchestra to play the wedding march. Chase rushed over and handed Jami his bouquet of white roses.

“I forgot this. I make a lousy groomsman.”

“That’s because you’re more of a brides-man and you did a great job.” Jami blew Chase a kiss.”

The orchestra began playing and a singer began singing, “You’ll Never Know.”

“Let’s do this,” Jami said to Max Sr. and they walked to the music. “Thank you for looking after the twins.”

“It’s my pleasure. When will I get an opportunity like this again, to be with my wonderful grandchildren? I like smelling their fresh new skin, and I might even change a diaper or two.” Jami saw a light reach Max Sr.’s eyes and they brightened. “I never told Max that I changed his diapers and stayed up at night with him, because his mother had been sick.”

Jami looked over at the old man who never looked more handsome and human than he looked then. “You should have said something, and you should have told him how much you love him.”

“I didn’t know how. You know it was the times. Men weren’t supposed to show weakness. And men weren’t supposed...” and Max Sr. knew it wasn’t the time to speak about how he had once thought and felt about two men marrying.

To his credit, Max Sr. always knew when he had gone too far and when to stop.

Jami understood. His father had been the same way about not admitting that his only son was gay. This wasn’t something he could admit to himself or anyone for that matter.

Looking at Max’s father, Jami wished it had been his father walking him down the aisle, but it was too late now. Too late for Jami to make up with his father, but he would have gone to see him if he had known that he was dying, and that’s what broke his heart. But now wasn’t the time to crowd his headspace with sadness and regret. Now was the time to fill it with love and expectancy for the future.

Now he had a father, and Max Sr. wasn’t so bad after all. He could have been worse. It just took a little getting to know him, and he came around, so there was hope for him yet.

When Jami walked down the aisle with his arm under Max Sr.’s arm, he wore an off white silk organza skirt with hand sewn delicate white flowers at the hem. The skirt extended to the floor and opened at his tiny waist to display an equally off white silk jumpsuit underneath with a low neckline off the shoulders. The walk would be a long one, with a short veil covering his face, and everyone invited would get a good look at the delicate man who would marry the most handsome man alive—Maxwell Gold Jr.

TAYLOR KNOX STOOD AT his best friend, Max’s side as he sweat nervously. He looked over at his husband, Payton, who looked handsome and statuesque. He loved that when they stood next to each other, they were eye to eye.

When they walked together they were an eye to behold. Women sighed and wished they had one or both of them in their bed, and gay men wept not because of the pairing of the two men, but because those two were so damned handsome, that it had to be a law against seeing two gorgeous men off the market.

And the straight men, well they never thought it would last. Men that tall, handsome and manly wouldn’t be able to exist on the same plane. One would obviously cancel out the other.

Taylor smiled at Payton and aimed a subtle wink to remind him of who he belonged to. Taylor couldn’t help thinking that when he married Payton, it was the best decision he had made in his life. Who else would marry him? he thought.

He had been a philandering stud for men and women since he was a teen
and discovered the joys and excesses of sex as a gay, and bisexual man.

“Don’t worry, Max,” Taylor said, “it will be all over soon. Then the fun parts will begin.” Taylor aimed a sly grin at Max. “And with you, it’s the honeymoon and the sex. You’d better get in everything you want in Rome, before you get back to your babies. I mean you’ll have your big baby with you, so fuck him everywhere there’s a hole.”

“Shut up, Taylor,” Max said from the corner of his mouth. “You talk too much. I had a hard-on and you managed to kill that. But that wasn’t a bad thing, I must say. Look at Jami. Oh my God. Have you ever seen anyone so lovely?” Max whispered breathless from the side of his mouth at Taylor.

Taylor glance up at Jami and compared him to the man in his life. It was only Payton for him, and he couldn’t see anyone who could rival the feelings he harbored in his heart and body. He couldn’t express how much he loved Payton because no one would understand. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, he thought, and his thoughts were on—

  “Payton.”

“How can you compare Payton to Jami?” Max asked. “Payton is built like a tight end or quarterback. He’s tall and good-looking, but my Jami is so delicate and pretty.”

Taylor turned to watch Max’s face and a blush fell over it.

When Max talked, Taylor saw something on his face. It was as if Max was ready to fuck Jami on that red carpet, in front of the hundreds of guests Taylor’s mother and father had invited to the wedding.

His parents lived to party, and this was the wedding of the century for them. But with all the photographers they would get an eyeful if Max bolted from the gazebo and ground on Jami in front of their guests.

“I’ll give you that one. You can’t compare the two,” Taylor said smiling and looking in Jami’s direction as he stood on the stone patio and then stepped down the stairs leading to the garden and walked down the aisle. The orchestra gave a cue and the music continued.
