Erik’s glowing ghost form stepped up to the well, his eyes filled with love as he looked on what remained of Chloe Nash. Fate had brutally cut off their future in this world, but there would be another chance for them in the realm that came after.
“I can’t bring back the dead, Chloe,” Weylock said. “Even my powers don’t allow me to do that. But I can make sure you both walk together into the next world.”
“Thank you,” Chloe said with tears in her eyes. For a moment, she looked as beautiful as she must have been while alive.
“Soon you’ll be holding hands again. Are you ready?”
“Will it hurt?”
“Not at all.”
By the time the Hexecutioner finished his sentence, Chloe’s ghostly restored form stood next to Erik’s, and a sixth sizzling crater had joined the other five on the lip of the well. The spirits gripped each other’s hands tightly. Weylock nodded at them one last time as they evaporated into the night.
The Hexecutioner hoped that the dead couple’s future would be brighter than their past.
On some level, he envied them. There would be no reunion for him with his wife. When his time came, he would go to a very different place than the one where Avery was spending eternity.
Being a Hexecutioner came with some fringe benefits, but an express ticket to Heaven wasn’t one of them. Folks who wielded the power of demons didn’t end up hanging out with angels.
Another terror-stricken scream drifted from the well, and a pleased expression crossed Weylock’s worn features.
“Bon Appetit.”
The balance of justice was being restored one pain-stricken scream at a time.
Weylock had failed to save the living, but at least he’d punished the guilty.
More horrors and death lay in his future, that much was certain, but there would also be more justice to dole out. More moments of quiet satisfaction like this.
Drawing some comfort from this realization, the Hexecutioner walked into the darkness. A lone knight on an endless, lonely quest to restore balance to a haunted world.
