St. John's Church in 1700 — Bach’s original place of burial. The church was in the eastern suburb of Leipzig, east of the city centre. During the Second World War, it was severely damaged and the ruins were blown up in the post-war years.

  St. John's Church in c. 1900

St. Thomas Church, Leipzig — Bach’s final resting place

Bach’s grave. Following the bombardment of St. John’s Church on 4 December 1943, Bach’s remains were transferred to the St. Thomas Church. The new grave with a bronze cover was inaugurated on 28 July 1950, 200 years after the death of the composer, who is now buried in the sanctuary of the Thomaskirche.
