Flesh and Blood Page 27

by Bill Kitson

‘Because if we delay any longer, someone will come along with another problem for us to solve.’

A month later, on Christmas Eve, three years to the day since we met, we were back at Mulgrave Castle, back in the private chapel, but this time there were no unknown murderers, just close family and a priest.

Eve looked radiant as she came up the aisle on the arm of her brother-in-law Sir Anthony while Harriet stood with Becky and Sammy. The girls hid their disappointment at not being bridesmaids at what I’m sure would have been billed as the wedding of the year, if they had anything to do with it. Later, Charlie, acting as best man, dug me in the ribs and with a cheeky grin announced, ‘Nice one, Adam!’

When we boarded a train at King’s Cross to return home from our honeymoon, for the latter part of the journey, there was only one other occupant in our First Class compartment, an elderly woman who looked very upset. ‘I’m going to see if that lady’s all right,’ Eve told me.

She spent a long time talking to the other passenger before returning to her seat. ‘She’s heading for Elmfield, and was going to take a taxi from York, so I offered her a lift. Did I do right?’

  ‘Of course you did.’

‘Anyway, you’ll never guess what she told me …’
