“Well,” he asked, smiling up at her. “Will you?”
Kat stared at him in shock.
“You’re asking me to marry you?”
“Trying to,” said Alex. “Although I think there are probably easier ways. Melting my glove wasn’t in the plan.”
“Put the sparkler in the bucket, Daddy!” Emmy had returned and was regarding Alex sternly. “And why are you on the floor? That’s silly!”
“Yes, why are you on the floor?” Tom echoed and then, when he realised exactly what Alex was doing, started clapping his hands and hopping from foot to foot. “Oh! My! God! He’s proposing! Look everyone! Alex is asking Kat to marry him!”
There was a ripple of excitement and suddenly the attention of everyone present was trained on Alex. He couldn’t have been more on show if a spotlight had shone on him.
“I hate attention,” he said ruefully to Kat. “This is why I’d rather just write the songs now and leave the performing to others. Please say yes! I’m feeling very self-conscious.”
Kat tilted her head. “It’s kind of fun to see you at my feet!”
“Not for me,” said Alex. “Kat James, I love you. Will you please agree to marry me before I have third-degree burns on my hand?”
“Can I be a bridesmaid?” asked Emmy.
“And me!” cried Tom.
“You can use St Wenn’s,” offered Jules. “The bishop will be thrilled!”
“Do drop the sparkler, dear!” urged Alice.
Then there was a hush as the onlookers waited for Kat’s answer.
“You do realise I’m going to look a right idiot if you say no,” Alex told her with a nervous grin.
Kat grinned back. “Yes! Yes!” She couldn’t play it cool any longer, and as Alex jumped to his feet she flung her arms around him. “Of course it’s a yes! Of course I’ll marry you!”
“Well, I hate to say I told you so,” Tom was saying to Issie, “but I told you so, oh ye of little faith! I knew those two were meant to be together!”
“I take it all back,” said Issie. “You were right. Happy now?”
But Tom wasn’t listening. “Don’t worry about thanking me now!” he called to Kat and Alex. “You can do that later! But I bet you’re both glad I persuaded you to come to Cornwall for Christmas, aren’t you?”
And as she kissed Alex beneath the fireworks and fairy lights, Kat knew she had to agree with her old friend. Cornwall for Christmas had worked out just perfectly.
