by Jane Porter

She shifted in his arms and put her cheek to his chest. His body was so warm. She loved his strength, and the confidence he had in her.

His love made all things possible.

His love gave her courage, and hope that one day the world would be a better place for all.

“Thank you for making me the sun,” she said, blinking back tears.

“The sun and the stars and all the universe.”

She blinked again and a tear slipped and fell, trickling onto his bare chest. “You lifted me up instead of smashing me down.”

“Ah, sweetheart, I will never let anyone smash you. We need our dreamers and thinkers.”

“And I need you.” She lifted her head and reached up to kiss him. “I need you, Sinclair Douglas, forever.”

  “Done.”

  Epilogue

McKenna sold the copper mine in the spring of 1890 to a Mr. William Schafer from Reno, Nevada, and then used a significant portion of the proceeds to build the first hospital in Marietta, and the rest to create a fund to help take care of the families that worked in the mine, for as long as the mine was in existence.

McKenna spent the early parts of the summer working with the architect commissioned to draw the plans for the new hospital. The new hospital would be built across the river from the courthouse, with access to the train depot and would be one of the most modern hospitals built in Montana outside Butte.

She continued writing her columns for the Ladies Home Journal, and practiced her cooking, which sadly, was still not a strength.

Fortunately, Sinclair hadn’t married her for her domestic arts and seemed perfectly content with his progressive wife who loved her books, and was currently reading everything McKenna could find on infants and parenting, determined to be prepared for October when the new little Douglas, their Hallowe’en baby, arrived.

Away in Montana, life was very, very good.

  No, make that exceptional.
