Doren
I moved in with Gwen. She sold her parents’ house and got us a little townhouse close to campus and demanded I choose a career for myself.
Me, a career man?
It wasn’t like I could search for “assassin jobs” or by my skillset of scaling buildings, silently stalking a target, or using a variety of weapons.
We walked side-by-side, Seymour following us. He wouldn’t let us out of his sight, even when we went to campus. The winter air was brisk, but the sun warm. It was the first time I’d seen snow, and it wouldn’t be the last.
I looked at Gwen. My beautiful, strong, inspiring Gwen. The woman who had saved my life, saved me from an existence of slavery and torture.
“What?” she asked. “Do I have something in my teeth?”
“No. I was just thinking.”
She nudged me. “You’re doing that a lot lately.”
“Because it still feels like a dream.” I laughed.
Gwen slid her hand into mine. “For me too. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
I turned my face up to the sky to receive the cold kisses of the large snowflakes floating gently down. “This life is a second chance to get everything right,” I whispered. I turned to her. “No more killing. No more secrets.”
Gwen’s brown eyes glistened. “Completely free.”
