“I will do my best for the kingdom of Elora by setting the mining detail early tomorrow. Give me a week and we should be seeing our first haul of runic stones. It will be up to yer mages and rune scribes to figure out what to do with it.”
Edric nodded, “That is next on the list of things to do.”
Thalia slithered over to the dwarf, bent over and gave him a hug.
“What is next for us?” asked Rayna. “We just kicked out a bunch of unruly players but they may be back.”
Edric looked to the purple and black haired bard, “We work on our defenses and build up our armies. Our troll alliance will surely understand after what just happened that Elora needs a better defense.”
“I have a Lancer training school in the Pearl District and already have a few students who have signed up,” Claudia smiled.
“After what happened yesterday, many of the shop keepers have requested for me to help train them in self-defense. They don’t wish to stand by and watch us do all the fighting,” Faye smirked.
Leeta stood, towering over everyone in the chamber, “The first harvest of grapes have almost matured. The new wineries will begin production in a few days.”
Edric looked to his fellow rulers and smiled. “It seems like a good start.”
Rayna turned to the troll, “And what about you, our mysterious Juna?”
Juna looked to Edric, “If you don’t mind, I would like to stay for a while.”
Rayna let out a laugh. “I’m sure you do,” she said before turning to the group. “Won’t it be a problem with the middle kingdoms that we have a troll nuke?”
“Troll nuke?” Edric said with a raised eyebrow.
Rayna smiled, “You saw what she did back at the dungeon. If she stays, the trolls may not like it.”
Edric closed his eyes and shook his head, “They don’t know the extent of her powers and it’s a secret we must keep.”
Juna tilted her head forward, shadows covering her eyes. “I don’t wish to be a concern.”
The summoner opened his eyes. “You are not a problem. Stay with us as long as you like and we will keep your secret. Besides, I’m sure we all want to know more about your history at the Cursed Coast. Any edge we can get on the Masters will go a long way.”
Juna nodded, “I will do my best and help anyway I can.”
Rayna yawned and stretched her arms over her head, “Yea…whatever. I think we all earned a drink. I’m buying.”
Dumadin perked up, “I’m with you lass.”
“I need a drink,” Claudia smiled.
Faye crossed her arms, “I could go for a shot or three.”
Thalia raised a hand, eyes closed and a cheerful smile on her lips, “Me too!”
Edric looked to his ruling family and gave a sad smile, “You all go ahead. I think I’m going to walk around my district for a while so I can clear my head.”
“Fine, everyone else, follow me,” Rayna pointed for the door.
The bard stepped up to Edric and leaned her head to his. “You still need a training session. I’ll be coming for you soon,” Rayna whispered as she marched on past the stunned Summoner.
Faye was next, “Don’t take too long. We have a lot to discuss about the future.”
Edric laughed as Claudia stepped up to him.
“Leave your door unlocked,” the lancer smiled and followed the wood elf.
Thalia slithered past, “I can reduce my poison. I’ll show you what I mean when you’re ready.”
Edric rubbed his chin, starting to find it all a bit embarrassing.
Juna walked up to the summoner, eyes soft. “I look forward to our adventures, Lord Edric Temple.”
“I too look forward to it, Lady Juna Reed,” Edric bowed.
The troll eyed him with a touch of gentle sweetness before she followed the girls out the core chamber door.
Dumadin stepped to the summoner, eyes on the women leaving, “If you ever need help with the overflow, I’m yer dwarf.”
Before Edric could respond, the dwarf hurried off. The room was silent as Leeta stood by her master. Edric turned his gaze to the beautiful ogre and sighed.
“Are you still going to go through with it?” Leeta asked.
Edric nodded as he reached into his satchel and pulled out a blue diamond shaped crystal.
Elora appeared, “Can I help you with anything more lord?”
Edric sighed. “This is a troll beacon crystal. What will happen if we add it to your core?”
Elora gave a puzzled look, “Once in place, trolls will want to make Elora its home. Adding a troll beacon crystal may cause a rise in conflict among the races here in Elora. I would advise against it.”
Edric looked into Elora’s blank eyes, his heart breaking. “I know but the only way we are going to defeat our enemy is if we turn some of them to our ways. I don’t expect you to understand right now but I hope this will lead to a brighter future for all of us.”
Elora bowed her head as Edric gave her a small smile. The summoner opened his satchel and placed the blue crystal in it.
“The others may be cross with you if you wish to add it to the core,” Leeta said in a low tone.
“We will all talk about it tomorrow. Tonight is meant for celebrating. Care to join me for a walk?”
Leeta smiled. The summoner and ogre moved out of the core chamber, Elora fading away from sight.
On the street, Edric and Leeta walked along Temple Street, lanterns glowing to life and many citizens moving about for the evening festivities. Edric took in a deep breath knowing there would be more to do before the city of Elora was truly an independent kingdom. For now, he was content to bask in its glow and admire the handiwork that went into building such a fine city.
The evening air drifted over the summoner and his ogre, a peaceful calm soothing away the recent troubles. Edric hoped that once they had regular hauls of runic stone more mages, rune scribes and alchemists would flock to the city. With their knowledge, he could acquire greater knowledge and build the weapons and protections they would need for the future. Thoughts turned with the tides and images of Juna filled his mind. The troll was something special but he didn’t quite know why. He couldn’t deny the connection and it warmed his heart at the chance to explore it further.
A hiss from a nearby alley shattered the day dreaming. Edric and Leeta looked over and in the inky darkness, a haggard lizard woman appeared.
“Lord Temple, please this way,” the old Nalik whispered.
Edric recognized her from the night of the celebration. Leeta put her hand on the pommel of her spiked mace but Edric waved her down. The summoner moved to the alley as the Nalik turned and faded back into the darkness. Leeta followed.
The three moved through a tight alley, making a turn and another turn until they could no longer see the street. Leeta’s yellow eyes glowed in the dark alley as Edric pressed on behind the old Nalik. After turning another alley corner, the summoner gazed upon two nalik females and one male. They all wore thick robes but each had a large satchel at their hips.
The old Nalik turned to Edric, eyes pinpoints of light. “Lord Temple, my name is Vanya, I was a rookery den mother in the dragon kingdoms. What I have to tell you is very important. Please hear me before you ask any questions.”
Vanya moved to the side of the other naliks. “Since the dragon kingdoms fell, many of my race were charged with rescuing what was left of the kingdoms. The dragons did not wish for another massacre, the same one perpetuated by the Kunarr many hundreds of years ago. We took many oaths and were given special abilities to ensure the Sindrell race would survive. Many of my people have braved the road south to find a safe place to house our precious cargo.”
The three naliks reached into their satchels and pulled out large, dark eggs. Edric’s eyes widened for he knew in his heart he was looking at dragon eggs. The shine glowed in the dim light as cracks crisscrossed the surface, giving the eggs a scaled appearance.
Vanya continued, “There are h
idden nurseries for the children of dragons but not all of them are safe. Some of my brothers and sisters fled south, unable to get all the eggs to every hidden location. A foul dread lord gives chase with his minions to find any of the eggs.
I saw the goodness in you when you fought for your people. Elora is much too dangerous to house the eggs here permanently but we ask if you can be a haven until we can move the eggs to more suited locations? My people will continue to trickle from the north, needing a place to stay for food and warmth before continuing on their journey to hidden sanctuaries. Lord Temple, will Elora be that safe haven for us?”
Edric’s eyes softened as he gazed into Vanya’s strong spirit. “You already know my answer.”
Vanya dipped her head, a tear forming at the corner of her eye. “Thank you Lord Temple.”
Edric looked up at the ogre, “Leeta, let’s get them someplace safe.” Edric turned to the gathered naliks, “Follow me. We will provide shelter, food and protection for all.”
Edric turned his gaze down to the dragon egg, his heart warming. “We will defend even the smallest spirit to our last breath.”
