The Zed smiled even wider before making a slow biting motion towards the muzzle of the gun. Then without attempting to move its head it growled, ‘We will kill you, you must die.’
Eve pulled the trigger and the back of the Zed’s head splattered all over the back of the cage. It fell backwards and landed on top of the mess it had created behind it. Eve stood back, holstered her gun, wiped the splatter from her face, and stole the line I’m sure I would have thought of a moment later if she hadn’t got there first, ‘Euston, we have a problem.’
Needless to say we were delayed leaving. Without knowing just how much of a leap in development they had made we decided to Bring Andrea with us. We had no idea if an eight-foot steel fence was still an effective perimeter and we didn’t want to leave Andrea alone to find out. We knew ammo was probably as important as food now and that our trip to the airport could easily be one way. We also knew that surviving as a group of five would probably be harder than as a group of twenty five.
As we walked to Mary and the truck Esme held Eve’s hand and Andrea held Bill’s. I tightened my grip on Seven and vowed I would protect them with my last breath. Esme hugged both of us before getting into Mary. After locking the gates behind us I climbed up into the truck next to Eve and she turned to me and said, ‘I love you. Stay close. If things get hairy just think of last night. There is no fucking way I’m going let these fuckers stop me having more nights like that. I don’t care how fucking smart they are. Their skulls still explode when you put a 9mm round or a sawn off titanium crossbar through them, and that’s something I can work with.’
Images and sensations from the previous night flashed into my consciousness and I replied as any hot blooded 22 year old Zombie apocalypse survivor who had just had a threesome would, ‘Fuck yea, let’s go crush some Zombie skull.’
