  How did it begin?

If you haven’t read Stone Age, the book that created the world in which Tom Rogers fights to survive along with the rise of the Teacher, then what are you waiting for? Stone Age was my debut novel, self-published in 2014 and a break-away success that launched my writing career.

  Back of the Book

I’m asked all the time, where I get the ideas for my books. Because Hell’s Requiem was unique in many ways, and a catharsis of several ideas, I thought it might be interesting to you, the reader, to learn from what deep recesses of my head HR sprouted.

The original idea for the music throughout this book came to me when I couldn’t get a song out of my own noggin. Have you ever had that happen to you? The damn thing rattled around my head all day long, and I couldn’t get rid of it until I got home. Then it was easy to exorcise this song-demon, as I’d listen to my favorite playlist on iTunes, and “poof,” the song was replaced with another.

“What song was it?” you might ask. I won’t tell you, because if I do, you’ll have it stuck in your head all day too. I know this because I gave it to my wife, and she cursed me for it.

The idea of a song-exorcism stuck, and afterwards I started to wonder what would happen if this occurred and I were experiencing a CME-induced apocalypse, like the one in Stone Age. That’s where Hell’s Requiem started to take root.

I already had great plans for Tom Rogers in the next book in the Stone Age Series (Remnants: Stone Age Book #4)—that’s a big hint BTW—and knew he had to have a fantastic back story. Like one of Stone Age’s main characters (Max), Tom was fighting some inner demons which needed to be slain before he was able to help others. And he certainly had a doozy. Really, what could be worse than having your child pre-decease you? If you’ve already read Hell’s Requiem , then you know the answer to that question.

The idea about the shooting accident (the cause of his son’s death) came to me from the TV show, Doomsday Preppers. On one episode, a year or two ago, they featured a prepper who was teaching his son how to shoot and a ricochet struck the father in the arm. I thought, Thank God that didn’t hit his body, or worse his head. Bingo!

In fact, it’s almost impossible for a ricochet to come back to its shooter, except at a less than lethal velocity. But if another shooter shot, and it was at the correct angle...

Guess that idea stuck, where it waited for the proper story in which to tell it.

As far as the songs featured in Hell’s Requiem, this is an actual playlist of mine. I just changed the playlist title, to make it more fitting for an apocalyptic thriller. If you care to listen to the play list, check it out on Spotify (http://www.mlbanner.com/spotify-Hells-Requiem). Originally the playlist (and therefore the book) was called Songs of a Dead Country. I toyed with this title, but it seemed a little long and I didn’t want potential readers to think it was about zombies. I’ve grown up with all of these are songs and each fit perfectly into the narrative of this story. Hopefully you’d agree.

Thank you for reading and please do me the honor of writing a review on Amazon and Goodreads when you get a chance.
