Midnight Shadows Page 38

by Emerson Knight

Ethan could break protective fields, something were-animals couldn’t do. Dark creatures had an unusual aversion to him. There was something very odd about him, yet each time I questioned him, he was quick to tell me he was just a were-animal.

Josh handed me a glass of water. I emptied it quickly. I sipped on my second glass slowly, as he stared at me from across the room. He was too perceptive to not know something was wrong, but I wasn’t sure if he really wanted to know.

Josh tried to convince me to stay longer, and usually I would have. We always ended our practice sessions the same way: sitting on the couch, snacking on the various junk foods that dominated his diet as we drank an unwise amount of alcohol while watching a movie with better special effects than storyline. But today I just couldn’t stay because keeping what I saw to myself was going to be difficult anyway, and there wasn’t any way I could maintain discretion doing typical post-magic activities. Today I needed to get as much distance as I could from Ethan’s brother.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

First and foremost, I'd like to thank McKenzie Hunter for allowing me to play in her world. What a fun place to be, with a rich mythology and full of complex characters I loved to spend time with. Midnight Shadows was a challenge! For the first time, Ethan has a significant story line that is unique from Sky's story. I don't know how I would've completed this book without my beta readers and Stacy McCright, who consistently kept me from straying off the path.

I'd also like to thank Gloria Knowles, C. Hindle, and the most supportive group of authors I could ask for: John P. Logsdon, Orlando Sanchez, Benjamin Zackheim, and Shayne Silvers.

Lastly but most important, my thanks to you, the reader. Fans of McKenzie Hunter and the Sky Brooks series have been very supportive of Ethan's POV, and I couldn't feel more fortunate. Without all of you, I wouldn't be able to do what I most love to do, write. You're the best!
