Chapter Fifteen
After Chloe and Jamie went home and my mom had stopped fussing over us, Trevor and I escaped to my room for some peace and quiet and rest. An empty large pizza box sat on the end of the bed near our feet. We’d eaten it between us. And I was still hungry.
“Man, I’ve never been so hungry. It’s weird. It’s not like before, you know?”
He nodded, and then winced. “I know. It’s like eating for the first time after being starved to death in some prison.”
My mom had patched Trevor up with some hydrogen peroxide and some bandages. He looked worse than he probably felt. At least, I hoped so. Because he looked pretty bad. I traced my finger over his cut lip. He sucked in a breath.
“Sorry.”
“Nah, it’s okay.”
“I can’t believe it’s really over.” I cuddled into the crook of his arm. “Like over over. Not just we killed Thane and Devon over.”
“I know, I feel it too.”
I splayed my hand across his chest. I could feel his heart beating beneath my palm. I nuzzled in closer to him, and the beat thumped a little faster and a little harder. I looked up at his face. His beautiful, wonderful face, even if it was a bit banged up.
“How can we be sure that we’re human again?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know. Wait and see, I guess.”
I shuffled up a little so I was face to face with him. “Or, we could ah, kiss. To you know test the waters.”
His smile came slowly, but damn, it was worth the wait. My heart did a little double dutch inside my chest, and my belly clenched hard.
“Oh you think so, do you?”
I nodded enthusiastically. “We owe it to society to make sure that we are definitely human again. It would be negligent if we didn’t. Besides I’ve never kissed you fully human before.”
His gaze locked on mine, he cupped a hand behind my neck and held me still. Slowly, he leaned into me. He tilted his head ever so slightly, and then gently covered my mouth. My head instantly began to spin, and I felt a zing all the way down to my toes.
He nibbled a little on my bottom lip, and then he deepened the kiss, his tongue sweeping over mine. I sighed into him, fisting his t-shirt in my hand. We kissed until we were both breathless. And not for one second did I feel the beast gnawing inside me to get out and feed off him. At least not the cambion beast. There was indeed something else there churning inside but it was just good old fashioned lust.
We broke apart, and I rested my forehead to his. I could barely breathe and it was wonderful. And normal.
“So, did you feel anything?”
“Ah, yes.” He chuckled. “The usual things.”
“Me too.”
I traced my finger over his face. I loved looking at him. He never failed to make my heart beat a little faster, and a little harder. He made me feel safe and secure.
I kissed him again unafraid of going too far and accidentally sucking the life out of him. Now we could make out like any other normal teenage couple. Snog our brains out, until the parental knocked on the bedroom door and told us to cut it out.
Life was good again. And although I knew I could take care of myself no matter what life threw at me, I didn’t want to face it alone. For now, I wanted Trevor to be there with me, beside me, fighting to the bitter end.
Or in our case, for a new beginning.
