  Description

Lincoln has studied every part of the female anatomy...

  …and how to stimulate them.

  Etta

I always thought I was the luckiest girl in the world being engaged to my childhood sweetheart. In fact, there’s nothing I love more than rushing home to him after a hard shift at the hospital. Except today I found out he’s a dirtbag, and he’s had someone else in our bed while I saved lives.

All I wanted to do was escape to my mom’s house but if things couldn’t get any worse, some asshole crashes into me and I find myself staring out through my shattered windshield at a kind stranger saving my life.

But who is he? And could his eyes be any bluer?

  Lincoln

I may be a billionaire and world famous biomechanics inventor but I’m a doctor first and all I’ve ever wanted to do was save lives. Making my way home after a long shift at Normont Memorial Hospital, I can’t wait to get home and relax, but when a car crash takes place on the highway, I know my help is needed.

With one driver dead and the other one losing consciousness, I need to work fast. But who is the girl who survived? Despite her being injured, she’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen, a real life. Sleeping beauty in a smashed up sedan.

All I want to do is save her, but she doesn’t know what for…

  Chapter One

  Etta

I held the catheter tube between my nail-bitten fingertips and tried not to look the old man in the eye.

"This won't hurt," I said. "But it may be uncomfortable."

"Listen lady, you're not the first nurse who's done this and you sure as shit won't be the last."

I ignored him as I fixed the tube in place then pulled the blanket back over his frail legs. They were thin like a bird's and marbled with a purple hue. Tucking him in, I gave him a warm smile and looked at the clock on the wall behind him. The old man noticed and turned round.

"Two minutes to eight," he said, his gruff voice croaking as he struggled to speak. "Almost shift change."

"You must have been here a while," I replied.

  He glowered at me.

  "What do you think?"

Placing his file back at the end of the bed, I said my goodbyes and walked out to the main desk. Lucy was waiting for me with her car keys swinging in her hand. Already out of her uniform, she looked down at her phone with her mind already far away from the hospital.

"You're keen to leave," I laughed as I signed out.

"Urgh... it's been a long week," she sighed without looking up from her phone. "You want me to walk you to your car?"

"Sure, I'll just be a minute."

The parking lot was situated in the basement of the building and always felt to me like I was walking into a tomb. As we stepped out the elevator, I shivered and jogged to catch up with Lucy who was striding ahead of me, face illumined by the faint, blue glow of her phone screen.

  “Hey, wait up.”

  Lucy stopped and turned round.

“What are you so happy about?” Lucy sneered.

“Geez, does it actually hurt you to smile?”

Lucy snapped her phone shut and pushed it into her pocket.

“Sorry, I’m just having a crap day.”

I linked my arm into hers and guided her over to their usual parking space in the back corner.

“Tell me all about it,” I said.

Above us, the light flickered, giving the already creepy parking lot a more sinister vibe.

“I hate this place,” she said.

“Me too. Remind me why we keep parking down at the far end. Anyway, what’s going on with you?”

“Ah nothing.Just, stuff with Gareth, that’s all. I think he’s seeing someone else.”

“Shut up!” I squealed and pulled her into a hug. “What happened?”

Lucy shifted nervously from foot to foot and glanced up at her car.

“Haven’t got time to talk right now. Need to shoot.”

I pouted and fluttered my eyelashes.

“Aaw I can’t believe you’re gonna keep me hanging.”

“I’ll tell you everything tomorrow,” she said and gave me a quick hug. “Promise.”

  I watched her drive a
way before climbing into my own car. I knew something wasn’t quite right with Lucy all day. She’d been easily distracted and strangely silent.

I’m so happy I’ll never have that problem, I thought.

As I drove out onto the highway, I thought about how lucky I was to have someone like Craig. We'd been together since high school and always boasted about only ever having two arguments throughout our whole relationship. The first one had been about what temperature to set the hot tub at. The second had been about me working nightshifts.

"But I can't sleep without you!" he'd moaned.

"We can catch up on the weekends," I'd assured him and he'd given me a playful wink.

Three months later, working long nights didn't seem so bad and there was one thing I always enjoyed, watching the sun rise along the rocky landscape as I drove home. Craig would be waiting for me at home with a cup of green tea and he'd tuck me into bed with the curtains open so I could fall asleep in the warmth of the pale sunlight.

I'd fill him in on all the gossip from the shift and I couldn't wait to tell him about Lucy and Gareth.

I always fell asleep as he kissed me goodbye and left for work, then I'd wait for the sound of his car leaving the driveway before rolling over to reach for his pillow. It always smelled like his black pepper and mandarin shampoo and I'd imagine he was lying beside me as I slept.

As I parked in front of the house, something twanged in my gut. Putting it down to being tired, ignored it and made my way inside.

"Morning!"I called out as I opened the front door.

Expecting to find Craig in the kitchen waiting for me, I was surprised to see nothing but two wine glasses on the table.

I stared at them for a long while. For a second, I thought my sleepiness had rendered me delirious but then I picked up one of the glasses and felt the coolness between my fingers. Looking closer, I realized there was a faint, pink lipstick stain around the rim.

  "Craig!"

The bed creaked as he woke up.

"Honey?" he called down the stairs.

There was the sound of him fumbling around the room and tripping over something.

"Shit, is that the time?" he grumbled and made his way downstairs.

He emerged at the end of the hallway in his boxer shorts, which I noticed were on backward. When he saw what was in my hand, his eyes widened but he remained silent.

"Where are your pajamas?" I asked.

He paused for a second and looked up to the ceiling.

"I left the heat on by accident. The room was like a sauna last night."

It seemed like a reasonable explanation but I couldn't help but notice the slight quiver in his voice.

"And what about these?" I pointed to the glasses.

He stared at them as though he noticed them for the first time.

"Sharon was over!" he blurted out.

  "You mean Sharon your sister?"

He nodded and pursed his lips.

"Yeah, she just dropped by after you left last night."

I looked back down at the lipstick stain and wondered what the occasion was. She never wore makeup. Always the tomboy you'd be more likely to find her in sweatpants than in a dress.

"It's weird you just left them there," I said as I dumped my bag and coat and made for the stairs.

"What do you mean?" he asked, following me close behind.

"Well you're such a clean freak. It's unlike you to leave dirty dishes lying around."

His breath quickened as we entered the bedroom. As I pulled back the covers, he sat at the foot of the bed and I noticed the dampness across his brow. Then I noticed the room was freezing. I reached out and touched the radiator and felt nothing but cold metal.

Looking back, I knew he was lying but I didn't want to accept it. Everything was perfect between us and I wanted it to stay that way.

"Would you like some tea?" he asked as he bunched the covers up around me.

"No. I think I'll just go straight to sleep."

He kissed my forehead and ruffled my hair, something he'd done since we were kids and I'd always hated. I scrunched up my face and smoothed the hair back down over my head.

"Watch it. You'll mess up my blow out."

He rolled his eyes and made for the door.

"Gonna grab a shower," he said and disappeared from view.

I closed my eyes and thought about how lucky I was to have him. Then I thought about the wineglasses again. Something wasn't right but I didn't want to ask the obvious question.

Rolling over and reaching for his pillow, I waited for the sweet peppery smell to send me to sleep but there was something else mixed in with it, a floral undertone and what was that? Sweat?

As I pulled it closer to my face, something brushed my arm. I reached below the covers and pulled out a tiny piece of fabric.

  "What the hell?"

I sat up and looked at the black lace that draped from my fingers. My stomach lurched and it felt as though my heart was going to beat out of me. I gasped.

  "Craig!"

There was no response but the sound of the shower.

I jumped out of bed and burst into the bathroom. He spun round, shocked. Noticing the panties in my hand, his jaw dropped open and he pressed his back against the wall, raising his hands in a futile attempt at protesting his innocence. Pulling open the shower door, I flung the panties at him and they hit his chest before flopping down toward the plughole.

"Bastard!" I screamed. "I knew you were up to something."

"Etta, please! It's not what you think!"

I didn't want to hear it and stormed out. Back in the bedroom, I ripped open the drawers and started hurling clothes into a suitcase.

Dripping wet and naked, he tried to wrestle with me, pulling the clothes back out the suitcase as fast as I was piling them in.

  "Get away from me!"

  "Etta! Listen."

He was sobbing too, his face flushed red as he shivered.

At last, when I thought he'd never stop fighting me, he sat on the bed and cradled his head in his hands. An array of clothes were scattered around us.

He cried hard, his naked body seeming pathetic as he said, "Don't leave me, please!"

I slammed the suitcase shut and zipped it up with such force the tassel on the zip broke away in my hand.

  "Just tell me one thing."

He peeked through his fingers, afraid of what I was about to ask him.

  "Who was it?" I seethed.

He pulled his fingers away and looked into my eyes.

"Nobody you know," he said. "A girl from work."

The tears were streaming down my cheeks but I barely registered them.

  "Why?" I sobbed.

He flung up his hands and shook his head.

"I wish I could tell you."

For a moment, he looked into my eyes for a sign of forgiveness. Meanwhile, I looked into his for a sign that he was still the guy I met all those years ago. I decided he wasn't and yanked up the suitcase.

  "Please, Etta, no!"

I marched out the house with him pulling at my arms.

"Stay! We can talk it over!"

But I didn't want to hear any of it and shook him off me.

Once in the car, I wiped the tears from my face and put the car into reverse. I could still see his naked figure in the hallway but I didn't want to see him anymore and tore out the drive without looking back.

A few minutes later, I found myself stuck in rush hour traffic. Now, at a standstill, I could take stock of what was happening. My hands trembled as they curled around the steering wheel and the front of my dress was wet with tears.

How could he? I thought. We'd been together for over ten years and he threw it all away for what? A fling with some girl from work? I wondered how many other times he'd been with someone else in our bed while I was out saving lives. I couldn't bear to think about it and reached for my phone.

A few cars ahead, the stoplight remained at red and I took the moment to text m
y mom to tell her I was on my way over. She'd be just as devastated as I am about Craig. After all, he’d been part of the family since he was a boy. Placing my phone back in my pocket, I looked up across the skyline. The sun was growing higher with its rays streaming down on the Normont Memorial Hospital. Whenever I saw it I was always struck with a sense of pride. I enjoyed my work and felt as though I was aiding society with every patient I helped.

I wasn't the only person who thought that way either. Placed in the center of the city it dominated the skyline and everyone knew someone who worked there. It was the largest hospital of its kind in the state and employed over two thousand members of staff. To the city, it was a place that was equally adored and respected, a place that mirrored the town's values of compassion and hard work.

As the light turned green, I stepped on the pedal. Mom's house was only a few miles from here and right now, I could really do with one of her hugs. I was so focused on seeing her that I failed to pay attention to the traffic around me. Meanwhile, the tears were blurring my vision and no matter how many times I wiped them, they came back.

If only I'd heard the siren of the ambulance as it came up on the right at the crossroads and the noticed the car that had run the red light as the driver panicked while trying to move out the way. If only I'd have noticed the Mustang loom up beside me I'd have hit the brakes hard.

But I never suspected a thing until it was too late. The sound of crunching metal was the first thing I noticed. Then there was nothing but blackness.

  Chapter Two

  Lincoln

"Okay, you can wake her up now."

The anesthetist, Harold twisted the dial on the oxygen and gently patted the patient's face with his thin, almost alien like fingers.
