I saw Edward and Grace mingling amongst the crowd of people.
The rooftop garden of the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a fountain of chocolate bubbling in the corner. I found chocolate to be an aphrodisiac and could substitute for sex. It didn’t compare to the feel of Frank driving me crazy and ravaging my body for hours.
Cassandra was the only one of his past lovers to attend. She was looking exceptionally sexy is red. I felt this momentary pain of jealousy. I reminded myself that he was with me and for some reason; he had no real feelings for a woman that was out of most men’s league.
“I’m glad you could be here to celebrate this milestone for my family. Out of all the women in my life, you are the only one besides Leila who understands me. I think it goes without saying we can never return to what we were, but maybe we can start a new chapter,” Frank suggested being the bigger man and not acting like a little boy by avoiding an awkward situation.
“I’m happy for you and it would be my pleasure to call you both my friend. It gives me hope that maybe I can find something more lasting than one night of some of the best sex I’ve ever had. I’m always moving around and you know not many people can survive the pace of my hectic lifestyle.” Cassandra was quite famous and somehow the restaurant had banned the press from getting close enough to get any candid shots.
“We’re going to have to compare notes. I’m guessing you have a lot of interesting stories you could share.” I was purposely making him uncomfortable by suggesting we could be girlfriends gossiping behind his back.
I knew a few eligible bachelors, but it was quite obvious she would make them feel like hit and run victims. I wasn’t sure how I felt about them being friends, but I did feel I had anything to worry about. Frank had turned over a new leaf and the last few weeks had been an extended honeymoon where we couldn’t keep our hands off one another.
We were living in sin falling into bed and using whatever flat surface we could find to express ourselves physically. It was a never-ending surprise and I could barely hold my breath long enough for him to be back in my arms. There was no end and no beginning to what we felt for one another.
I thought of one young man in the prime of his life that might’ve been a match for Cassandra. Wesley was the intellectual type and I had harbored a secret crush for him during my formative years in high school. He wasn’t the usual teacher and he went out of his way to make learning fun for his students.
Frank went over to his parents and I was somewhat surprised to see them. Our families’ were the best of friends, but spending time with one another was always about timing. It didn’t look like any time had elapsed and they easily immersed into a conversation like it was common for them to go days without seeing one another.
This was another thing we had in common. My parents were a no-show and there were times I had to take out their photograph to remind myself what they looked like.
I took out a card and scribbled Wesley’s name and telephone number. I took Cassandra’s hand and placed the card in her palm.
She looked at me quizzically not sure what to make of it.
“Give him a chance, but be patient. Trust me; he’s worth the effort and maybe you can find your own path to happiness,” I said thinking that I was doing her a favour, but in the back of my mind I was getting rid of the competition.
I heard somebody tapping a fork to a glass of champagne and looked up to see Frank standing on a raised podium.
“I arranged this party for my best friend and Grace. I’m very happy they will be having a new addition to their family, but there’s another reason why I have gathered all of you here. I have finally found what all of you have been talking about for years. I thought mistakenly you were all foolish for settling down with one woman. I guess I hadn’t found my princess until I realized that my friend was more to me than I could ever imagine,” He said with his glass raised and I had no earthly idea of what he was going to say next.
He did have everybody’s undivided attention including his parents who looked a little stunned by how he had found his voice. They looked proud and held his gaze with me watching intently curious to know what was on his mind.
I had no clue he had something up his sleeve and he gave no indication. It worried me that he could keep this kind of a secret, but I had to trust in his feelings for me.
“Most of you already know I’m engaged to be married to the woman who has become everything to me. Just hearing myself say it is strange, but I couldn’t be happier. Leila has always been there and I didn’t know how lucky I was until we admitted the way we felt for one another. I’m here to announce this is the venue for our wedding to be held on Valentine’s Day three months from this very day.” His announcement brought forth a chorus of whispers and then a rousing applause to celebrate his good fortune.
We had been going back and forth about dates for the past few weeks. There was always something getting in the way. He had gone above the call of duty to scrutinize the calendar to find something that would work for the both of us. I thought we had decided on a yearlong engagement, but he had jumped the gun by expediting things by a few months.
“I promise to love her for the rest of my life and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with her. Don’t breathe and I haven’t run this by her before announcing it. It might be a little premature to celebrate until I get the all clear sign from her.” His words made everybody turn in my direction waiting for my approval.
He was sweating waiting and I made him stand there with the awkward silence filling the air.
Words were not enough when actions could speak louder. I walked through the separated crowd and joined him. I abruptly pulled him down for a kiss to show him that I was quite happy with this latest turn of events.
We stayed for quite some time, but I was getting tired and my feet were barking at me. I finally signalled him with a nod of my head and we discreetly made our way to the exit.
I noticed Cassandra staring at the card I had given her. She looked mildly amused and I had a feeling Wesley would have a reason to shake off his widow status sooner than later.
They might’ve been different in many ways, but opposites had the tendency to attract.
I had a standing arrangement to have brunch with Cassandra and her other friends every other Sunday. I was going to drag Grace along and there was no reason to exclude her when we were one big happy family.
