“I’ll back her up,” Simon said.
Dana halted at the ambulance to tell the EMT what she had done. "Her arm may be broken. There wasn’t time to check Mr. Grantlan. Oh, you may need to do a blood alcohol on Patricia.” She placed Jenny in the car seat.
Simon plucked the keys from her hand. “I’ll drive.”
“I’ll let you. Why didn’t you tell me May was my late night caller?”
Simon fastened his seat belt. “I was too angry. You let her see Jenny any time she wanted. She had no reason to do what she did.”
“I wonder what else she’s been hiding.”
“Not sure I want to know.”
When they reached the house they unloaded the car. Jenny settled in the cradle. Simon slipped his arms around her waist. “There’s something I need to say.”
“And that is?” She braced for words that meant he would leave her.
“I love you. I loved you years ago but I was selfish and immature. I’m attempting to change. I want to marry you. I want Jenny to be my daughter. When I saw her I fell in love a second time.”
Dana turned into his arms. She saw love light his eyes. “I love you now and always.”
He stepped back and pulled a small box from his pocket. “I was going to take this slow and give us time to know each other. I don’t want to wait.”
“Will we be partners and open about what’s happening.”
“Yes.”
“Then I don’t want to wait either.”
He opened the box. “No flashy diamond. Years ago I bought this on a whim.” He slid a ruby ring onto her finger.
She kissed him. “I prefer this. I had a flashy one. Sold it to pay the doctor.”
“Did Randy know?”
“Happened on the day he asked for its return so he could exchange the ring for one for Melanie.”
Simon laughed. “Would liked to have seen his face. He was an asshole.”
“I agree.” Simon pulled her into his arms. She moved even closer. When his mouth touched hers she opened to allow her tongue to caress and explore.
Warmth built. Dana felt as if she might burn to ashes. Their lips parted. “Should we change our scene?”
“Family room?”
“Long enough to take Jenny upstairs. She can finish her nap in the crib.”
Simon lifted the infant and carried her upstairs. In the nursery he placed her in the crib. Dana turned on the monitor. With a swoop he lifted Dana into his arms and carried her to the master bedroom. He lowered her to her feet.
Dana stepped back and unbuttoned her blouse. He tugged his shirt over his head. Her hands opened the zipper of her jeans and used her thumbs to skim them and her panties over her hips. Simon sat on the edge of the bed to remove his sneakers and socks before pushing his jeans down.
Dana ran her hands over his chest pausing to tease his nipples. She walked her finger along his belly and grasped his shaft. He teased her clit. Their mouths met in a ravenous kiss. She sucked his tongue into her mouth. His erection slipped between her legs and moved with the same speed as his tongue.
Dana gulped a breath. “Better sheathe. I can’t wait much longer.”
He lifted her onto the bed and slid the condom on. As he thrust inside, Dana wrapped her legs around his hips and held him still for a moment while she savored the feeling of fullness. His mouth covered hers. He rocked forward and drew back. The burn began. Dana moved her head to catch a breath and moved in sync with him. The burn became incandescent and she cried his name.
An instant later, he roared her name and gathered her close. “Each time is better than the last.”
She stroked his face. “For me, too.”
They curled around each other. Dana dozed in the safety of his arms. The soft whisper of his breathing soothed her. Sounds from the nursery woke her. Simon was gone. She stared at her hand. The sight of the ruby told her she hadn’t dreamed his proposal.
Simon strode into the room. “I changed her but I think she’s hungry.”
Dana held out her arms for her daughter. She opened the nursing bra. Simon slid into bed beside her and slid an arm around her shoulders.
She turned her head. “No flight?”
“We’re a family.”
“Now and forever.” She snuggled against him. The dreams of the past had been rekindled. She knew the flames of love would burn bright forever.
