He pulled as close to the stadium as he could go.
The gate was open.
“I’m hiding the keys on the wheel and leaving it unlocked,” Bear said. “If anything happens, get back to the truck.”
“Why are you leaving the keys?” Katie said.
Bear swallowed. “In case something happens to me, you can still start the truck.”
Katie stepped away from her brother and held onto Bear’s arm. Bear hauled the backpack up on his shoulder and winked at Stan. Stan held up his middle finger. The four of them walked through the gate and they stepped into the dark alcove under the home-side bleachers.
The metal door in front of them banged open and Bear prepared to run.
Coach McKnight leaned out with a shotgun rested over his shoulder. He smiled and gave Bear a thumbs up. He moved to the side and waved them inside.
