He’d tear the throat of anyone who dared put his mate and his young in danger. If that bastard Skoll dared touch a single hair on her head Rafe would end him then and there.
Charley closed her eyes on a wave of pain that brought her to her knees. She didn’t know how long they’d been there, Skoll had spent the time on his phone. He’d been arguing with someone though it was in a language she couldn’t identify. He clicked off the ell and turned to face her as she gritted her teeth in pain.
“Ah, are you about to whelp then? I’ve no use for you, bitch, but that young may be valuable. I have the acquaintance of a Dark Witch who will use your baby’s organs to fuel a magic that will end the Macconwood Pack!”
“You will never get your slimy hands on my baby!”
“Ha ha ha, want to bet?” He came towards her and Charley backed up as far as she could against the rotted wood wall.
Fear and pain warred with each other inside of her until she thought she’d pass out. He reached his thin arms towards her and she screamed and swatted his hand away. That only made him angry. He raised his hand as if to backslap her and Charley tried to protect her stomach from his blow. But it never came.
Before he could reach her, a black torpedo flew at him out of the dense stand of trees. Charley gasped, but was soon overjoyed to see the familiar shape of her husband’s Wolf. Skoll did not have the chance to retaliate. Rafe had him by the neck and with a nod from her head, he closed his jaws, hard.
“Rafe! You found me! Oh, thank God, ahhhh!” She groaned in pain and the Wolf leapt over the corpse of his enemy to stand by her.
He nuzzled her face with his met muzzle and licked her cheek. A whining sound came from him as she clung to him and cried into his dark fur. A second later she was against skin and her husband was running his hands over her gently though frantically, checking for injuries.
“Carlotta! Are you okay? What did he do? Did he hurt you?”
“No, he didn’t get the chance! Ahhh! Rafe! I, uh, I think the baby is coming!”
“What? Here? Now?!”
Charley screamed and held her stomach as a powerful contraction hit her. Rafe held her hand and helped her to stand once it had passed. She wanted to get as far away from Skoll and everything that bore his scent. His Wolf thoroughly approved of the sentiment.
“Come here, baby,” he picked her up in his arms and started to walk through the trees to where her car was stranded. He was naked and barefoot, but he didn’t even notice.
Conall and Liam just arrived as he put Charley down in the trunk of the car and nodded towards Seff’s prone form. His Beta looked like a pile of clothing on the road, limp and unmoving.
Liam tossed Rafe a pair of sweats that he pulled out from under his shirt. Rafe pulled them on as Conall stooped down to check on Seff. Charley squeezed his hand and gritted her teeth as another contraction hit her.
“What’s wrong with him?” Rafe asked concerned for his Beta, but preoccupied with his wife.
“Dark Magic, Skoll said a Witch helped him. Rafe!!” Charley screamed and tried to sit up.
“Call the doctor! Get the ambulance here!”
“It’s too late, the baby is coming now, Rafe!”
Rafe slid the long skirt his wife had on up her legs. he looked at her and waited for her to nod before he ripped the cotton panties she had on off. He grabbed the blanket that was in the backseat and covered her best he could.
“Carlotta, I can see the head. Okay, um, baby, you can do this. You’re braver than anyone I know, it’s going to be okay,” he murmured softly. He believed it too. She was amazing and, the wondrous things her body was capable of, struck him dumb.
“Rafe, I can’t, I can’t!”
“You can, my love, look at me. I was wrong okay, I should have never tried to stay away from you. I thought I was protecting you, but I stifled you. I am so sorry. I love you, you’re my heart, you and this baby. We can do this together, I swear I won’t let anything bad happen to you, to either of you,” he cradled her head and kissed her softly.
She cried and kissed him back and he felt his heart swell. She screamed as another contraction hit and he whined in sympathy. He felt helpless. The sounds of the ambulance reached his ears. He felt wild, nervous. His eyes went to Liam who flagged down the vehicle.
Charley gripped his hand and he was amazed at her strength, but not really. His mate was strong and brave and wonderful. She was going to make it or, by God, neither was he.
Rafe switched position he stood by her head and supported her back while Dr. Davis came over with a gurney. By then his entire Wolf Guard and security detail were scanning the area. The rain had stopped, but it was still cold, and they were out in the open.
His Wolf was bristling inside of him. He lifted his wife and transferred her to the more comfortable gurney. He couldn’t allow anyone to touch her just yet. Mine.
“Mr. Maccon, I am going to look at your wife to see where we are,” the doctor explained before she touched Charley and that was good. He still felt raw and emotional after the attack.
“Okay, I see the head is almost out, okay stop the gurney please. We’re going to do this here.”
“Here! She can’t give birth here!”
“Tell your child that, Mr. Maccon,” the doctor said.
“Okay Charley, push now,” Dr. Davis ordered, doing her best to remain calm under her Alpha’s fierce scrutiny. She never realized how much the man loved his wife until now.
“Someone get Mr. Maccon some antiseptic wipes. Get the blood off him. He’s about to become a father.”
He hadn’t noticed the blood splattered across his chest and hands. He’d killed tonight to save his mate and he had no regrets, but he wouldn’t hold his child with that traitor’s blood on his hands.
A second later, he’d dumped a bottle of hand sanitizer all over himself and wiped it off with a bottle of water and a clean towel from the ambulance.
“Rafe! RAFE!” Charley screamed his name.
Rafe waited without breathing. In fact, no one made a sound for what seemed like a very long time. And then, he heard the most beautiful noise in the world. A soft mewling cry coming from the tiny bundle the doctor had just handed his wife.
Tears poured down Charley’s face as she held their baby. Rafe stepped towards her and put his arms around her, things went blurry for a second and he realized that, he too was crying at the sight of their perfect child.
“Oh, my! Mr. Maccon?”
“Yes?”
“Please take your son from your wife.”
“A son? It’s a boy!”
“Yes, take him now. Charley get ready,” the doctor ordered.
“Ow, Rafe! Ah! Ow!” Charley yelled as another contraction hit her hard. Rafe was just in time to take his son as Charley yelled out loud and bore down.
“And it’s another boy!”
“What? Twins!” Conall was grinning as the doctor handed the second baby to Rafe who now held two sons in his hands.
“But how?” His question was muffled by the groan of his wife who looked as if she were still in pain.
“Honey? Carlotta?!”
“And another push, Charley come on!” Dr. Davis couldn’t believe it, she’d heard of twins that were difficult to detect, but this was ridiculous.
“I can’t, I can’t! Ahhhh!” Charley was exhausted. Her body felt broken in two, but she felt another contraction and just had to push.
“Great job! Here comes baby number three, and, it’s a girl!”
The doctor gave the newest addition over to Charley who looked radiant in her exhaustion. Rafe gathered around his wife and daughter with his sons in his hands. Babies, mother, and father were loaded into the ambulance as a second vehicle came for Seff.
Rafe had protected his family. They were healthy and safe. His Wolf howled in his mind’s eye. Their matebond glowed with the power of their love.
“Carlotta, you are full of surprises, my love,” he said.
“Y
eah, but I didn’t know just how full!” She giggled and then yawned. She was wiped out and he smiled as she nuzzled their children while the ambulance drove them to the hospital.
EPILOGUE
“Who’s on duty tonight?”
“Me!”
“No, it’s Uncle Conall’s turn!”
“Back off, Conall! It’s Uncle Dib’s turn to stay up with the wee ones!”
Charley laughed from where she sat nursing her oldest son, Owen. His younger brother, Val, short for Valen, had just finished his meal and was napping in one of three bassinets that sat in the main living room. Rafe stood near her, rocking their daughter, Rafaella. Charley had insisted they name their daughter after him.
The babies had been home for a month now after spending a week in the hospital. After a few days of observation, Dr. Davis determined that she never detected Charley was pregnant with multiples because their hearts, when they were near to each other, beat perfectly in time.
Such a thing, she’d never heard of before, but she vowed to keep it under wraps as it was surely a part of their supernatural heritage. Rafe held his wife in bed that night after all three babies had been tucked in their cribs in the adjoining nursery.
Charley hated to be separated from them, but Rafe insisted even perfect mothers needed their sleep. Besides, they had eight live in nannies! The one thing they’d never lack for was babysitters!
It was a god thing too. Triplets were bound to need a lot of care. Especially his children!
“Rafe?”
“Yes, my love,” he asked as he lay with his head on her soft belly.
“That was incredible. I love you.”
“Me too. You and the babies are everything I’ve every wanted. I hope I am worthy of you all.”
“Oh Rafe, you’re a natural born father. The babies already recognize you and love you. And I do too.”
“That’s good Mrs. Maccon, because I am never letting you go.”
The doctor had given the okay for them to be intimate and he’d relished the idea of getting his wife in bed all day. He’d waited months to show her how much he loved her, and he did, with every single fiber of his being.
Mine.
