A few minutes later the rope gave enough and I slid my hand loose. My arms were still bound to the chair, but I managed to ease my hand into my back pocket and turn on the phone. I fumbled around enough and pressed a button, praying to God it was the number one, which was my emergency contact. Callie herself.
No more had the phone started to ring and the broken down garage doors flung open. “Don’t nobody move!”
Never was I so glad to see anyone in my life. Callie stood there, gun drawn with two of her deputies and Ed right behind them. He hurried toward me while Callie and the deputies apprehended Moose and the others.
“Are you okay?” Ed leaned down and untied the rope.
“I am now.” I rubbed my wrists where the rope cut into them. “How’d you know where to find me?”
“Ethel called when you didn’t show up. I called Callie. Ethel remembered you telling her about following that car and we took a chance.”
“I was afraid I’d never see you again.”
“Why in the world would you go off alone like that? You know better. Sometimes I wonder if you have a brain in that pretty little head. Damn fool woman!”
I’d never heard Ed so angry. Not that he didn’t have a right to be. It was foolish to come here alone. Tears filled my eyes.
“Never again, Ed. I promise. My investigating days are done.”
“Well they sure as hell better be. You’re not a spring chicken any more, Bea. It’s time to let Callie do her job and start minding your own business.”
“I’ve never been or felt so alone in my life. Promise you’ll never leave me.”
Ed put his arms around me and squeezed. “Beatrice Lulu, you’ll never be alone. Leastways not as long as I’m around.”
God I love that man. I sighed. As Mama used to say – “all’s well that ends well.”
