“Lou, this is Mr. Thomas Andrews. Mr. Andrews, this is Louise Rose,” I say.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Rose.” As they shake hands, he looks at me and says, “Please, call me Thomas.”
“Very nice to meet you, Thomas, and you may call me Lou,” Lou says with a huge smile on her face. Oh great, she has her “Oh my God, you are so going to hook up with this guy” look. Hate it when she looks like that. Drives me nuts.
“Well, Nat, I’m going back to dance. I see David has finally shown up. You two should come and dance in a bit.” She looks at me with that goofy look again and winks at me. Well, she approves, but do I? I still have that odd feeling as he stands next to me.
“May I sit?” God, why is he so formal? I’m nothing like this. How do I know him? Why won’t he just tell me?
“Sure,” I say.
“Are you feeling well now?”
“Much better, thank you.”
“Good, I had to see you. I’m sorry I scared you earlier. I should have announced who I am. I mean no harm.”
“You just took me off guard, that’s all. I’m not used to being pursued, I guess.” God, why did I just say that? My brain filter seems to be malfunctioning.
As he’s looking at me, the MC announces that it’s almost time for the bidding to end. “Please excuse me. I want to check on an item,” he says as he gets up from the table. I watch him walk away, trying to wrap my head around the events of the day, and now I’m faced with a person who says he knows me from my past but won’t tell me how. He’s good-looking, but why do I get this strange feeling when I’m close to him?
I feel myself staring off into space as Thomas makes it back to the table with a box. His winnings from the silent auction, of course. Crap, I forgot all about my bid. Well, apparently I didn’t win, since my name wasn’t called. Bummer! I would have loved to have that butterfly jewelry box. It was so beautiful.
“Would you like to dance?” he asks me.
“Sure, but what about your box? You shouldn’t leave it on the table.”
“You’re right. I’ll be right back.”
He comes back to the table without the box and holds his hand out for me. I take his hand, and he leads me to the dance floor. We say nothing to each other as we start to dance. The music sounds familiar, but I’m not sure why. I finally ask him, “Will you tell me how we know each other?”
He looks into my eyes, and as he does, I do see something familiar, but what? After a few moments he says, “I am not sure how to tell you. But I would love to show you if you let me.” What am I to do with that? As he looks at me, I’m feeling more comfortable with him, and that strange feeling I had before melts away.
“How do I know I can trust you?” I finally ask.
“What does your heart tell you?” he whispers.
“It’s telling me to give it a try.” What spell does this guy have me under? I’m not the type to do anything like this. I tend to keep to myself most of the time, daydreaming or reading books, not running off with strange men who say they know me.
“How about I pick you up from your flat at eleven tomorrow morning? I will show you, and then you can see for yourself.”
“Sure, that sounds fine.” We continue to dance to this wonderful music. He’s a very good dancer, and he leads me well. It’s comfortable, as if we have danced together before. Maybe we acted together or something.
