He moved again, watching her. “No, I need to see your eyes on me the first time, Julia. Just hold on to me, baby,” he said.
He brushed his lips over hers and moved faster, deeper, making her feel each movement. Julia ran her hands up his back and held on, never having felt this kind of closeness before. Just listening to him, feeling him, she wanted to cry out, and she bit her lip as she felt herself coming apart under him. Logan moved faster, watching her. She took in his fierceness, his male pride, and his love for her as he came with her, flooding her with warmth.
Chapter 31
Logan swore he had died and gone to heaven. He blinked in the bright sunlight streaming through the bedroom window. Then looked down and took in Julia, who was draped across his chest, snoring softly. He wondered how long he had to wait before he could tease her about something like that.
He glanced at the bedside clock. It was almost noon, and he had taken Julia two more times before they finally succumbed to sleep—once in the shower, pressed against the wall, kissing her deeply and taking her fast. He was worried he’d been too rough, but when they moved into bed, Julia had surprised the hell out of him by climbing on top and riding him, slow and easy. She had run her hand through her hair and touched her small, perky breasts, teasing him. He had plans for those breasts and every part of her; to taste and sample and take his time doing it.
He was imagining how he’d wake her when the bedroom door burst open, and Logan reacted, pulling the duvet up to their shoulders as one of the twins raced in. It was Trinity, Dawn right behind her, all smiles and wide eyes when they saw Logan in bed with Julia, who was still sound asleep on top of him. This was not good. Even Logan knew parents shouldn’t let kids walk in on them! He knew better and should have checked to make sure the door was locked.
“Mom!” Trinity called out, and Logan kept his hand where it was when Julia jumped and blinked. Her hair was sticking up, as she’d fallen asleep with a wet head. She was confused, and her eyes widened when Dawn poked her. She leaped around and let out a screech, which had Ben appearing in the doorway, taking in their compromising position with an amused quirk of his brow.
“Mom, are you and the sheriff getting married?” Trinity asked. The girls stared down at Logan and then Julia, and Ben coughed.
Julia stiffened. Logan could feel her thinking, scrambling to come up with something believable to tell her impressionable twins.
Logan propped himself up on his elbow and glanced down at Julia, who was worrying her bottom lip between her teeth. “We’re together,” he said, more to Julia than the twins. Some of the worry left the bunched lines on her forehead. “Your mom and I are together,” he repeated, “so maybe Ben, there, can make us some coffee, and you girls can have breakfast.”
The twins both looked at each other and then at Logan. “So are you going to be living here?” Trinity started. Julia pulled the covers over her head.
“Go get breakfast,” Logan said with a laugh. “We’ll talk about this later.”
He was surprised when the girls both left, chattering away about flower girl dresses.
Ben, who was nodding, said, “So when’s the wedding?”
“Out!” Logan shouted, and Ben laughed and pulled the door closed. Logan peeled back the duvet to uncover Julia’s face. She winced.
“Logan, what are we going to do?” she said with a groan. “I’m so embarrassed…to be caught by my daughters!” She opened her eyes and studied him, and he could see her worry. “This was fast. I know the girls presumed we would just automatically get married.”
Logan pressed a gentle kiss to her lips. “Good morning,” he said, taking in her startled expression, then her slow and easy smile.
“Good morning, Logan.”
“Julia,” he said as he moved over her. Her arms went around him before she darted a worried glance at the door. “Ben’s got them,” he said. “He won’t let them in.”
She let out a sigh of relief and seemed to relax, and her eyes widened as she felt the good morning he wanted to share with her. He settled inside her and moved, waiting until she relaxed beneath him before he spoke.
“I want you to feel me when I say this; I do want to marry you, when the time is right,” he said. He moved again. “I’m not going anywhere. I told you last night you were mine, and I meant it.”
She was relaxing beneath him. There was something about having him inside her—she couldn’t hide anything from him.
“Julia Cooper, when the time is right, will you marry me?” he asked. He held himself still inside her, and her green eyes flared with passion and teared over.
“Yes, Logan, I will marry you,” she whispered.
Epilogue
“Hey, there you are!” Julia said, sliding her arm around Logan’s waist and settling in as he looped his arm around her shoulders. He had been talking with Sue, the principal of the school, who excused herself and left them alone.
Julia lifted her hand, admiring the diamond engagement ring Logan had slipped on her finger seven days before. She kept playing with it in the light, holding it up and loving the feel of the small rock.
“So have you told everyone yet?” he asked her teasingly before he bent down to kiss her.
“I told Ruth and everyone who came into the cafe, so I’m sure everyone in town knows by now,” she said. The lights flickered in the school gym, which was doubling as an auditorium.
“I guess we better take our seats. Where’re the girls?” Logan asked.
“Backstage, just getting ready for their presentation.”
Logan led Julia to the second row in the full gymnasium for the year-end presentation. Every parent and sibling was there, and the noise was a low hum.
“So what are the girls presenting, again?” Logan asked.
“I’m not sure. They said it was a surprise,” Julia added, linking her fingers with Logan’s and leaning into him. This was still so new. Logan had moved in, and she’d been surprised at how good he was with the twins, especially reading to them. Neither of them could pull anything on him. Nightmares still plagued Trinity, and it was Logan who just held her, seeming to know the right thing to do. He was her rock, and Julia wondered whether she’d wake up one morning and realize he was too good to be true. He was everything for her, and she had never realized the depth of feelings it was possible for her to have. She had never realized she could love a man so deeply.
Sue walked on stage in dark pants and a white shirt, and everyone clapped. As she announced the first students, Dawn and Trinity appeared together, hand in hand, wearing big smiles and identical peach sundresses. They both went to the microphone, and Trinity held up a paper and said, “The topic of our presentation is family.” She turned to her sister, and both of them giggled. “I want to tell you a story about how my sister and I found the sheriff with my mom, and now he’s going to become our dad!”
Julia choked beside Logan, who laughed out loud. There were a few gasps in the packed gymnasium, and Trinity and Dawn looked to each other and high-fived, their expressions filled with mischief. When they stared back out to the audience, they were absolutely angelic once again.
