52 Author’s note: What was actually said in this exchange was not recorded. Heywood later recounted: ‘At that last interview with Christian, he also communicated to me, for the satisfaction of his relations, other circumstances connected with that unfortunate disaster, which, after their deaths, may or may not be laid before the public.’ (Barrow, The Mutiny and Piratical Seizure of HMS Bounty, p. 85.)

63 Author’s note: The curious thing is that, according to Owen Rutter, this Log (or, as I have called it, a journal) was not given to the Admiralty. There is no copy of it with the Admiralty or in the Public Records. Bligh’s Admiralty Log ends with him leaving Timor in the Resource, before Fryer and Purcell are arrested for mutiny and the brief trial of Hallett, Cole and Ledward. It is unknown what happened to these intended-to-be official volumes. Perhaps on returning to England, Bligh thought better of making mutinies seem like a habit on his watch. Similarly, all mention of this remarkable uprising was left out of Bligh’s published narrative of his travels. The logs vanished and only reappeared via Bligh’s grandchildren, who gave them to the Mitchell Library in 1902.
