“Back when Mr. Michaels and I got all cut up. Remember, with all those blackberry vines and stuff? Remember when we became blood brothers?”
Katherine did remember. She turned back to the mirror, reexamining her face, hoping to find something. She pushed and stretched the skin, searching. There was nothing. Not even a scar.
“Pretty cool, huh?” Eric said.
She turned back to her son, trying to hide the growing panic she was feeling.
“Katherine?” It was O’Brien calling from the tailgate. “Is everything all right?”
She looked at Eric with rising wonder and fear.
“Hey, you two?”
The van rocked slightly as O’Brien rose and started toward them.
“Yeah,” she called back. There was a tremor in her voice, but she was able to cover it. “Everything’s fine.”
She looked at her son another moment, then pulled him into a fierce embrace.
“Mom,” he protested. “Mom, I can’t breathe.”
But she would not let go; she pulled him even tighter. Then, looking up at the pine tree and the moon rising behind it, she blinked back her tears and whispered a quiet prayer.

His children book series, My Life As…, has sold 2.1 million copies. As an author, his children series have made the Best Selling list as well as seven of his adult novels. He has been interviewed for Good Morning America and ABC Nightly News. Several of his novels are currently under option for motion pictures including Blood of Heaven, When the Last Leaf Falls and his 12-part Forbidden Doors series (winner of the C.S. Lewis Honor Award). The motion picture, The Wager, staring Randy Travis and based on his novel by the same name, was recently released.
