“We can leave Thebes within the week,” Sahure said. “I was between assignments, on leave, so I’ve no commitments to keep me here. Pharaoh said something about a gold of valor ceremony, and he’ll have to invest me with the title of nomarch, of course, but then we can sail to Ibis. You should meet my mother before we go,” he said as an afterthought. “You’ll like her. And she’ll dote on Seknehure.”
“So maybe what, another one or two banquets to suffer through?” Tyema said, amused at the idea.”I can handle a few dinners. Now Pharaoh has recognized us as man and wife I can sit with you and not be marooned at the table of simpering ladies-in-waiting.”
He put one arm around her shoulder and planted a kiss on her cheek. “I don’t think there’s anyone in the Black Lands happier than I am this evening.”
“There’s just one tiny cloud on my horizon,” she said.
He did a double take and the chariot swerved under his lack of attention. “Name the thing and I’ll resolve it.”
She leaned close. “I want to drive.”
