“Calm down, Billy. Sometimes it takes hours to have a baby. If you’ll leave the room I’ll examine her and let you know how long it will take.”
“I’m not leaving her,” he said firmly. “Please,” he begged, “Don’t let anything happen to her.”
“She looks to be doing just fine. Now, if you insist on staying here, you’ll have to be quiet so I can check her vitals.”
Anna lay quietly, but every three or four minutes she’d gasp and then relax.
“Billy,” she said. “Calm down. I can do this. I’m tougher than I look.”
He held her hand while the doctor examined her.
“She’s coming along nicely,” Harris said. “It won’t be long at all. I knew she’d be the model patient. Keep up the good work, Anna.” Harris turned, took a seat, and brought out a newspaper.
“You’re going to read? Now?” Billy asked, still somewhat panicky.
“There’s nothing to do, yet,” Harris said.
Anna squeezed his hand. “Calm down, Billy. Violet told me exactly what to do. She said to relax and take a deep breaths during the pains.”
“I’m so sorry you have to endure this pain,” he said. “Is this anything you can give her, Doc?”
“No, because soon I’ll need her cooperation. Relax, Billy,” he said. “Before you get Anna upset.”
Billy kissed her forehead, he put cool cloths on her head, he rubbed her back between pains, and he held her hand throughout.
“Doctor,” Anna said, a few hours later. “I think the baby is on the way out. I can feel it.”
“What?” Billy said. “Doctor, do something!”
Doctor Harris folded his newspaper calmly, washed his hands in the water Billy had given him, and examined her. “By golly, you’re right Anna! The head is halfway out already.”
“One more push should do it, Anna…that’s it…I have it!”
Billy squeezed her hand, and they both watched as Doc Harris pulled out a very red and wrinkled baby.
“Is it a boy or a girl?” Anna asked, breathlessly.
“It’s a girl! A beautiful baby girl,” Doc Harris said, holding her up as he cut the cord. The baby gasped and gurgled and then let out a healthy wail.
Harris wrapped her in the blanket Billy had provided, and handed the baby to Anna. “Good work, Anna. You were a pleasure to work with, just like I told your husband ten months ago.”
“Do you remember the girl’s name we picked out, Billy?”
He nodded as he gazed at the miracle in his wife’s arms. The baby had stopped crying and was gazing all around.
“Kansas?” Billy said with a wink.
“No, silly,” she said. “We agreed on calling her Faith, remember?”
“I do. I was joking. Louisiana…Kansas—get it?”
“Faith Julia Croft doesn’t think it’s funny,” Anna said with a smile.
Doc Harris packed up his bag and Billy walked him to the door. Billy couldn’t return to his family soon enough.
He had a family. Praise the Lord! He was a father.
