  A glossary of names, people, places, objects, and terms found in The Mages’ Agenda. Pronunciations and brief descriptions or definitions included.

  Abalimyr (AH-bay-le-meer): elvish for “vampire.”

  Adral (A-drahl): a member of Kenard’s crew.

  Adrin (A-drin): Iltar’s father, a grand mage from Alath.

  Agents of the Order: a group of mages within the Order of the Mages of Alath; they typically operate alone or in small groups under the direction of the Order’s council for various assignments. Their ranks consist of graduate mages. They often are sent on espionage related assignments. In times of war, agents are used as long-range scouts. During the rebellion against the Karthar Empire, Lith Luzdom urged the Mages of Alath to create a division within the Order capable of carrying out covert tasks; they acted as the eyes and ears of the rebellion. Agents often work with the League of Surveilors.

  Ahzeald (ah-zee-ahld): a notorious prison in the Kingdom of Los, also known as, The Castle.

  Alabeth (ah-LA-beath): a city in the Kingdom of Los, northwest of Alath along the river dividing the Kingdom from Kerindor.

  Alacor (al-a-CORE): a powerful necromancer, and former grandmaster of the Soroth Necrotic Order.

  Alath (ah-LATH): the city of mages located in the Kingdom of Los.

  Alban (AHL-bin): a crewman on Captain Kenard’s ship.

  Aglin Gulf (ahg-lin): a gulf on the south of the Kaldean Mainland. It borders the nations of Holorum, Klis and the Kingdom of Los.

  Almar (AL-mar): a grand mage, and the half-brother of Iltar. The oldest son of Adrin and a member of the council of the Order of the Mages of Alath.

  Almdan (alm-dan): a city between Klath and Alath.

  Amendal Aramein (ahmn-DAHL ah-RAY-mein): an old conjurer from Soroth well-known for his magical prowess and deranged mental state.

  Amulet of Draconic Control: an ancient device created by the Irum’mak’sha toward the end of the dragon wars. It consists of three pieces: the metallic housing, the activating scroll, and the Ruby of Lish. It has the power to control red dragons. Coupled with the tethering stone, it can open a one-way portal to other worlds.

  Anken’mar (ayn-KEN-mahr): a platinum dragon exiled to Draco Isola. Also known by the title, vik’sha. He was slain by Iltar and Cornar.

  Angath (ayn-GATH): the leader of a cult established in the mountains north of Alath. She was captured by Erindal and imprisoned within Los’s Prison Castle, Ahzeald.

  Angolith (ayn-gaul-ith): a stronghold north of Kildath in the current nation of Litor, a battle site during the war with the Mindolarn Empire.

  Angrin (ayn-grin): a port city on an island in the Kalishir Ocean.

  Anula (AHN-u-LAH): a performing mage, trained by Rinden as an illusionist at the Estate.

  Aquinn Grove Retreat: a hunting lodge outside of Klath, near the village of Klimith. It sits in a grove within the borders of the Melar forest.

  Arbath (ARE-bath): a large port city in the Kingdom of Los. It is well known for its establishment of social trends.

  Arcane magic: a type of destructive magic, usually wielded by wizards.

  Arch Magi: the elven title for the spiritual leader of an elvish city. Arch Magi are masters of magic, devoted to protecting the elves under their jurisdiction.

  Arch Warder: the elven title for the civic leader of an elvish city.

  Aron (ay-ron): a warrior and trusted member of Cornar’s adventuring band.

  Arpran (are-PRAIN): a type, or channel, or magic that can heal, regenerate, and prolong life.

  Arpranist (are-PRAIN-ist): a mage practicing the arpran magical discipline.

  Arschicna (ar-schig-nah): a type of flower, and the name of a trading vessel from Soroth.

  Aser’kel (ah-ZUR-kill): the Master Hunter, a male elf who lived during the Thousand Years War.

  Aserin (AAH-sur-in): the former warder of Sharim, now occupying a seat on Merda’s new Council of Elves.

  Ashulbah (ash-ul-BAH): a hiss’thrak possessing an illusion created by Iltar. A cold and calculated malevolent being,

  Athirin Plague (AH-thyr-in): a devastating calamity which swept across the Kingdom of Los during Almar’s youth.

  Au’misha’k (ow-MI-shoo-k): the draconic name for “Amulet of Draconic Control.”

  Balden Ramus (BALL-din, RAY-muss): a half-elf necromancer trained by Iltar. Originally from Keth, the son of Wiltam and Elith Ramus.

  Barlyn (BAR-lin): the Arch Warder of Merda who lived during the Karthar Empire, and nephew of Ilnari.

  Barsion (BAR-zhi-ON): a type, or channel, of protective magic used primarily to create defensive barriers, but it can also restrain.

  Barsionist (BAR-zhi-ON-ist): a mage practicing the barsion magical discipline.

  Beglar’s Theater (): a notorious opera house in Alath’s Mages’ Park.

  Benidyl (ben-e-dill): an old elf occupying a seat on Merda’s new Council of Elves.

  Bradeth (bray-deth): an illusionist and a member of the council of the Order of the Mages of Alath.

  Brandir (bran-deer): a prominent discerner for the Soroth City Watch, specializing in homicides and crimes committed by mages.

  Bredan (BREE-dawn): an Agent of the Order, cocky and arrogant

  Cabrin (KA-brin): a friend to Nemral, who traffics rare goods in Klath.

  Cadiem (KA-dee-um): an officer aboard the Ilssilis.

  Cadru (ka-drew): Captain Kenard’s first mate.

  Callun (kall-un): a barsionist and a member of the council of the Order of the Mages of Alath.

  Candersil (kan-DUR-sill): one of three Ma’lisha who ruled Merda for over four hundred years.

  Cess’nal (CHEZ-nahl): a title designating the most elite elven warriors. It is also the name of a type of armor crafted during the dragon wars.

  Channeling Staff: a mage’s weapon used to accelerate projectile magic. They range in length, from a phineal to four phineals, and are cylindrical. A groove lines its length.

  Chardin (char-din): a captain in the Sorothian Navy.

  Cheserith (chez-err-ITH): the red dragon responsible for enticing the dragon wars (the Thousand Years War).

  Cilgan (kill-GAN): the corrupt Baron of Sereth.

  Cilrandra (sill-ahn-drah): the Master Transmuter, a female elven mage who lived during the Thousand Years War.

  City Watch: a civil organization within most cities devoted to keeping the peace. Their ranks include: watchmen and discerners.

  Colth (COL-th): a city along the southern highway of the Kingdom of Los.

  Conjuration Anchor: an ancient magical device capable of binding rogulin crystals. Typically, a conjurer is needed to act as the waypoint for a rogulin crystal to open a portal, but the conjuration anchor replaces them. It is classified as “machine magic”.

  Conjurer: a class of mage specializing in opening magical portals.

  Conjurer’s Ring: a ring with an inlaid rogulin crystal, used by the Mages of Alath. They are typically given to Agents of the Order.

  Cordel (CORE-dell): a warrior hired to guard the Soroth Necrotic Order, a pupil of Cornar, and a member of Iltar’s expedition to Merda.

  Cornar (CORE-nahr): a notorious warrior and adventurer. His signature weapons are a double-bladed short sword and a serrated dagger.

  Credal (CREE-dahl): an Agent of the Order.

  Crin: a young mage-in-training, and a pupil of Almar.

  Daeryn (day-rin): son of Emalyn and Kadren Shasnar.

  Dalgilur’s Isle (DAL-gill-uer): an island in the southeastern hemisphere of Kalda.

  Delur (deh-lure): a captain in the Alathian Frontier Guard.

  Demitru (deh-MEE-true): a childhood friend of Tilthan and Nath.

  Demsal (dehm-sahl): a young warrior in Iltar’s expedition to Merda.

  Dendra (den-dra): Nemral’s cousin who manages Hethway’s Tavern in Alath.

  Denistir (den-is-tuir): a captain in the Sorothian Navy.

  Desolate Lands: the nickname given to the easternmost continent on Kalda. Much of the cont
inent is covered in sand and littered with weathered ruins.

  Devourer, the: a name used to describe the strongest Ma’lisha.

  Discerner: the title for a detective in the City Watch.

  Dith (DI-th): a young conjurer from Soroth, taught by Amendal Aramein.

  Dorgin (dore-JIN): the custodian of the Master’s Wing in the Estate of Concorious Knowledge.

  Dorin, the Mage-King (dore-EN): the first king of the Kingdom of Los, also known as Dorin the Mage-King.

  Dorins: a Losian coin, the standard currency which all other amounts revolve around.

  Dorith (dore-ith): grandmaster of the Order of the Mages of Alath.

  Drake’s Seven, the: a notorious tavern within the Mages’ Park, named after a suite in Sharzen.

  Dragon’s Isle: an island in the northwestern hemisphere of Kalda. It was a battle site during the Thousand Years War, and since then been a burial ground for the platinum dragons.

  Elfim (elf-IM): elvish for “half-elf.”

  Elven Paper: a thin sheet of magically imbued paper, also known as “magical paper”. The magic gives it a glossy texture and protects it from decay. It can be written upon by any object, a finger, drilled quill, a needle, etc. The objects width determines the thickness of the marking. Markings can be stricken by another object, only if the top corner of the page hasn’t been torn; otherwise, the writing is preserved indefinitely.

  Emalyn (ee-MAH-lin): Captain Shasnar’s wife.

  Eradas (eh-RAD-as): the name of Dorith’s transmogrified drake.

  Erindal (er-in-DAHL): a powerful and influential mage from Alath who lived prior to the Mindolarn Empire.

  Esmid (ez-MID): the oldest Ma’lisha, who was once a mortal man. Known by titles such as, the Devourer and the Grand Oracle.

  Estate of Concorious Knowledge, the: a complex of buildings housing the Order of the Mages of Alath. It sits on a mound within Alath’s heart, on a plot measuring thirty five hundred phineals by four thousand six hundred phineals. It has four entrances, aligned with the four points of the compass. At its center is the Main Hall, surrounding it are the six schools of magic. Beyond the six schools sit the two halls for the Masters’ Wing, the acolyte dorms, two dining halls, and two buildings dedicated to non-magic study. Near the east and west entrances of the Estate are armories and graduate dorms for Agents and Protectors of the Order. Near the north gate is a grand gathering hall, capable of sitting thousands. Near the southern entrance is a stable and earthen mound, the last for transmogrified steeds. Not far from the same gate is a grand courtyard with a seven tiered fountain

  Exchange Committee: an organization responsible for monitoring all trade affairs crossing the borders of the Kingdom of Los.

  Fanisar (fan-uh-see-ur): a bladed staff weapon. Variants exist throughout Kalda among both humans and elves. Typical fanisars in the human realm consist of a single shaft, between three and four feet in length, a curving blade at one end, and a weight at other end; often sphere-shaped. The elven variation is a double-bladed staff. The staff can break apart into three sections and is bound together by a chain.

  Fathal (FUH-thahl): the Master Elementalist, a female elven wizard who lived during the Thousands Years War.

  Fench (FEN-ch): a strange but unique creature conjured by Amendal. He is often mistaken for a fairy because of his transparent wings.

  Fidolin (FID-o-lin): Klath’s port magistrate.

  Foreign Affairs: an organization in the Kingdom of Los responsible for immigration.

  Fren: a transmuter and a member of the council of the Order of the Mages of Alath.

  Frink: a bird native to the Melar forest.

  Frontier Guard: an organization responsible for protecting the borders of the Kingdom of Los.

  Gadrine (GAH-drine): a mid-sized vessel of the Sorothian Navy with four decks, one above the main. They measure fifty-nine phineals from stem to stern, with a breadth of twenty phineals.

  Galasan (gal-a-san): a captain in the Sorothian Navy.

  Gangolin (gan-gol-in): a mythical creature akin to a dragon, but without wings. According to Amendal, they roam the Melar Forest.

  Gastrim (gas-trim): a landlocked nation between Kerindor, the Hendan Principality, Klis, Kaladorn, the Western Sovereignty, and Mindolarn.

  Gegarin District (ge-GAR-in): a prominent district in the city-nation of Kildath.

  Globe of Darkness: a favored spell of Iltar.

  Gosset (gos-set): a white long-necked bird. Black tips mark the edges of the wings. Pale yellow feathers cover their crowns and run partway down their necks. When hunting for food they dive into the water.

  Grand Mage: a magic wielder who specializes in wielding each of the seven magical channels: arcane, arpran, barsion, conjuration, elemental, illusion, and transmutation.

  Grand Phineal: a thousand phineals, a length used for denoting large distances and often abbreviated G.P. on road signs and in conversations.

  Grand Oracle: one of Esmid’s titles.

  Grensil (gren-sill): an Arpranist and member of the council of the Order of the Mages of Alath.

  Griffith (Griff-ith): a grand mage, apprentice of Almar and an Agent of the Order.

  Guardians of Kalda, the: a band of men, elves and dragons who protected Kalda after the Thousand Years War.

  Guardians of Soroth, the: an elite guard responsible for protecting Sorothian officials and the royals of the neighboring islands.

  Hagen (hay-gen): an illusionist and trusted friend to Iltar, distinguished by his high-pitched voice and overly dramatic demeanor.

  Hethway’s Tavern: a tavern on the eastern side of Alath’s Inner City.

  Hedron (head-ROHN): the youngest of the elven elders among the slaves of Merda, he also occupies a seat on Merda’s new Council of Elves.

  Heleron (hell-ERR-on): a god many to whom Sorothians and sailors pledge faith. His persona is typified as a merman with a trident.

  Hem: an illusionist in Iltar’s adventuring band, and Hagen’s former pupil.

  Hemolin (HEE-moh-lin): a mythical creature with nine legs and eyes circling their bodies, said to be brown or black. In some legends they sit upon the shoulders of their masters. They are said to possess the ability to detect decay, and a variant of this is claimed in The Paled Man legend: the ability to smell dirty children.

  Unknown to most, the beings known as hemolins are sentient and extremely malevolent. Unless they are “unleashed”, they merely exude the darkness magic (Ko’delish). When unleashed, they can possess a body.

  Hemrin (hem-rin): a warrior and trusted member of Cornar’s adventuring band, who has incredible luck.

  Hex: one of Iltar’s trusted friends and a wizard specializing in elemental magics.

  Hidel (hi-dell): the magistrate of the Foreign Affairs office in Alath.

  Hilarn (HILL-ahrn): the capitol city of Holorum.

  Hiss’thrak (hiss-a-THRA-ack): draconic for, hemolin.

  Holorum (hole-OR-uhm): the southernmost nation on the mainland. It borders the Kingdom of Los, along the Melar forest. The majority of the country comprises an enormous peninsula resembling a dragon’s head. One of its defining features is a mountain range spanning the length of the nation called, the Dragon’s Maw Mountains.

  Idina (EE-di-nah): a young illusionist in training, a student in Iltar’s class at the Estate of Concorious Knowledge.

  Igan (eye-gahn): one of Iltar’s trusted allies who died on the Dragon’s Isle. He was a wizard who specialized in the arcane sub-discipline, and Tinal’s mentor in the magical arts.

  Illusionist: a mage specializing in creating illusions or enhancements.

  Ilnari (ILL-nah-ree): an elf who lived during the Karthar Empire. He was Kardorth’s Supreme Commander.

  Ilssilis (il-sah-sil-is): a Sarin class vessel commanded by Captain Yargis.

  Iltar (ILL-tar): a necromancer from Soroth and the grandmaster of the Sorothian Magical Order. He was born to an illusionist named Gwenyth from Soroth and a Grand Mage from Alath named Adrin.

>   Ilvantis (ILL-vahn-tiss): the oldest of the elven elders among the slaves in Merda, born before the city’s collapse. He occupies a seat on Merda’s new Council of Elves.

  Jagrin (jag-ryn): a member of Kenard’s crew.

  Jalel (jah-lee-el): a necromancer, Alacor’s brother and the youngest member on the Soroth Necrotic Order’s council.

  Jastim (jah-stim): a captain in the Sorothian Navy commanding a Kadrea class vessel in Captain Yargis’ fleet.

  Julina (joo-lin-ah): a hiss’thrak possessing an illusion created by Iltar.

  Jurdalan (JER-dahl-uhn): the Master Corusilist, a male elven mage who lived during the Thousand Years War, and wielded corrosive and pestilent magics; similar to a necromancer.

  Jurin (jur-IN): an officer aboard the Ilssilis.

  Ka’nakar (ka-NAH-carr): draconic for, activating scroll.

  Kadirus (kad-ir-us): a qui’sha who rose through the ranks of the Karthar Empire and seized control of its armies after the Emperor’s death and Esmid’s abandonment.

  Kadrea (KAH-dray-AH): a small-sized warship of the Sorothian Navy with three decks, one above the main. They measure thirty-eight phineals from stem to stern, with a breadth of thirteen.

  Kadren Shasnar (CAD-rin shass-nahr): a shipping captain from Klath, and a childhood friend of Tilthan and Nath.

  Kalda (call-duh): the world where dragons were birthed.

  Kalder (call-deer): a warrior-adventurer, second in command to Cornar. He typically wields a large two-handed sword.

  Kardorth (car-dorth): one of the oldest elven cities and capitol of the elven realm. During the Dragon Wars, it was a place of refuge for the humans, elves and dragons battling Cheserith’s Empire.

  Karthar: a region along the northeastern continent of the Mainland. Much of it is uninhabited by humans and is a forbidden land decreed by the early kings of Los. The neighboring nations enforce the borders, barring travelers or adventurers from entering the Karthar region.

  Karthar Empire, the: an empire which rose to power twelve hundred years before Iltar’s quest to find the Au’misha’k. The empire reigned over the entire continent known as the Mainland until it was overthrown by rebels based in Alath.

  Keepers of the Ka’nakar: an ancient group of humans dedicated to protecting the Ka’nakar.
