Beyond the Veil (Dawn of Hope, Book 1) Page 5

by Irden Forrest

“He has ordered me to imprison you. I have no choice.”

“Wait, sir,” Zack began, but the king and his escort turned their horses around and left, galloping back to the Palace on the far side of the city. “Wait!”

  “Calm down, Ancient.”

“I am not an Ancient, I’m a human; you don’t understand!” Zack was furious. This wasn’t anything like being rescued. Samantha grabbed him and shook her head.

“Just obey, and you will be released within a few days. Now come with us, don’t make this worse.” The captain looked as deadly as he was friendly — it was better to simply obey and avoid unleashing his wrath.

They were guided at spearpoint to the outskirts of the city. Samantha began to see the prison long before they were close: a stout, barrel-shaped building with tall, thick walls and a field of shimmering magic separating it from the city itself.

“I want you to stay here and behave. Only a few days will pass at most. Please understand, our leader commands it.”

With that said, he gave them no time to reply and left.

Zack and Sammy looked at each other in confusion. Everything had gone wrong so quickly. They hadn’t even had time to react.

Suddenly, a whimper from the back of the cell alarmed them.

“What was that, who’s there?” Zack asked, just as a pair of small feet moved forward towards him.

Faye stepped out of the shadows and looked up at both of them.

“I wished to see you again,” she said with her beautiful, large eyes full of tears, “But this wasn’t what I wanted for you…What do we do now?”

Zack took a deep breath and sat down on the bench beside him.

“I don’t know, Faye,” he said, biting his lip and looking at the rough wall in front of him, “I don’t know.”
